Why so many white people social/subcultures as compared to blacks?

[I started thinking about this while people watching today on my lunch break. I noticed that I can separate white passers-by into any number of subcultures, niches or categories - there goes a frat boy, yuppie, hipster, punk, goth, euro creep/trash, stuffy professional, student, hippie, blue collar mook, skank, preppie, biker, etc.

But when it came to the African American passers-by, there was significantly less variation - thug, business professional, thuggish professional, and whatever you call hoochie mamas these days.

What’s up with that? Is it that we’re already dealing with a smaller subset of the general population, so there’s just going to be less social variation?](Why so few African American social/subcultures compared to whites? - In My Humble Opinion - Straight Dope Message Board)

I take it you find his OP offensive?

What gave you that idea? Was it the thugs, the thug professionals or the hootchie mamas?

Or maybe the fact that the OP has trained his eyes to wash right over the black yuppies, goths, hipsters, frat boys and punks? Because, Lord knows, black people are never any of these. Nope. Only white people. Blacks are all thugs and hootchies. Why would I be offended by that? No need to get my hootch all up in a bunch now, is there?

Seems like kind of a convoluted way of saying “you people all look alike”.

In my admittedly anecdotal observation, I’ve basically seen black people hanging with what were being bandied about in that thread as “white subcultures” in approximately proportional numbers relative to their percentage of the population as a whole, though I suppose there would be some obvious exceptions (i.e. White Supremacists, Square Dancers, etc.). So, I would reckon that there are as many times the number of “white” subcultures as “black” subcultures as there are as many times the number of white people as black people. Oh, wait, there’s a shitload of other people we’re ignoring…oh, well so much for that.

Man that made me kind of tired…:dubious:

Not only do we all look alike but we all look like thugs and hootchies. That’s the part that sanded my vajayjay.

Black yuppies are invisible.

During the Inauguration Day broadcasts, I saw/heard several comments that “We shall Overcome,” should now be changed to “We have Overcome.”

Biggirl rightly points out, no, we have not. Not by a long shot.

If anything, we’ve only just begun, but I don’t think a kiss for luck and we’re on our way is anything sufficient.

Well, the ones that *don’t *look like thugs and hootchies have somehow insinuated themselves into one of the *white *subcultures, duh.

Ow!

Well yeah, I mean look at the Yo Gabba Gabba guy, he just screams “thug”!

(I’m sure I now owe a keyboard or two to some parents of small children)

Well, my eyeballs certainly feel assaulted now. We’ll put him in the thug category. If his pants get any tighter around the package, we’ll have to switch him to hootchie.

If the linked OP is a parody, it’s hilarious. If it’s serious, Freejooky is kind of an idiot and maybe kind of a racist.

That said, there’s a certain sort of lucidity in his question, if we assume that black punk kids or goths or old people or whoever are subsumed into an all-encompassing subculture, while black thugs, businessmen and hoochies are not. I dunno why we’d assume that, but if we did, it’d be an interesting question.

I was informed that the current accepted term is “thugfessional,” replacing the older variant “professionug.”

See? That’s what I’m saying. They’re totally overlooking the Hoochie Papa and Thugina subcultures, and everything in between, like the guy in the photo.

(who IRL, BTW, seems to be pretty interesting)

I’ll go with hootchie mama. You know, Biggirl, you wouldn’t get so upset if you just wore your thong without it riding up all the time.

If by hootch you mean cheap liquor, I can think of a damn good reason.

I like hootchie mamas no matter what the ethnicity. Just sayin’ is all.

To be fair he did have Skank as the white equivalent of a Hoochie Momma, and Biker to offset the Thug. so not all of his descriptions of whites were positive. That being said will no one think of Steve Urkel?

Why are you bitchin’? Ran outa water melon, fried chicken’n’menthols?

I didn’t even need to open the linked thread and I knew it was going to be stupid. Jesus, I’ve met about 15 black people in my life (there just aren’t a heck of a lot of black folks around these parts) and none of them were thugs, profesiugs, or hootchies. In fact, if I were to think about it, they didn’t really have much in common at all.

And that’s 15 people. With 15 different ‘types’. I have trouble believing that in a city with a much larger black population only 4 ‘types’ can be picked out by anyone other than a twit.

Only tangentially pertinent:

Nothing says subculture more than the movie Mean Girls–I refer to “unfriendly black hotties”.

Love that line and that movie. Maybe the poster hasn’t seen it?
