He projects an attitude of having too high an opinion of himself. A superior attitude in somebody who actually is superior is annoying enough - seeing it in somebody whose abilities appear to be just average is much more annoying.
AShton Kutcher is not a dumb guy, he was working on gettting a biochemical engineering degree at the University of Iowa when he was discovered in a “fresh faces” contest. I’m not saying he is a genius, but he isn’t dumb, either.
Wiki says his “planned major” was biochemical engineering, so he may not have been in the program before dropping out.
I’ve never seen him in anything except that commercial where he’s snapping pictures all over a boat. Several of the passengers and crew seem pretty annoyed with him too. Is that a play on this general, negative sentiment?
Dude, where’s my car is the only teen sex-comedy I’ve seen that I don’t hate.
I like him for the most part. He was good in That 70’s Show, Butterfly Effect and Dude, Where’s My Car which is really underrated.
For me though he is overexposed and I haven’t been interested in a movie he’s done since Butteryfly effect.
Justin Timberlake was already an established actor before The Social Network. He broke out in 2006 with three movies: Alpha Dog, Southland Tales and Black Snake Moan. He received almost unanimous positive reviews from critics, though most of them were surprised. (Or even apologetic.)
I have to admit that I’ve never watched “Punk’d” so maybe I’d have a different opinion of him if I did.
He’s a conventional actor of average talent. Nothing separates him from the hundreds of other similars who float around average television and average low to mid-range budget movies. His unconventional relationship with Demi Moore kept him in the spotlight enough that he would obtain steady work in the above entertainment categories.
Ashton Kutcher was great on That 70s Show, and it suffered after he and Topher Grace left. But most of the other things I’ve seen him in, I’ve thought that it would have been better if somebody else was playing his part. The Butterfly Effect has a great concept- it has a great Twilight Zoney feel to it. But Kutcher is too weak an actor to carry it himself.
Plus he’s apparently maintaining simultaneous relationships with Jessica Biel and Olivia Munn. I figure he must have had to deliver a few Oscar-worthy performances to keep that triangle going.
yeah, I know, I was just giving an example.
I’ve only seen him in a few movies (Butterfly Effect, Just Married) and two shows (That 70s Show and Punk’d).
He’s great in the movies and fine in 70s Show, but those are him acting.
Punk’d, on the other hand, shows him being, well, himself…and he the absolute biggest, egotistical, big-headed, “I-think-I’m-the-most-hilarious-and-witty-person-on-the-face-of this-earth (but he’s not)”, douchebag that I’ve ever seen.
So if he’s like that in all the on-camera instances where he’s not acting, I can totally understand the hate.
I have absolutely nothing against Ashton Kutcher as a human being. The REAL, live, flesh and blood Ashton Kutcher seems like a very smart, funny, engaging guy.
And, in a few things (like “That 70s Show), he’s been an effective comical second banana. He’s very good at playing a child-like doofus. As long as he sticks to such roles, he can be very funny in small doses.
My problems with him are:
- The child-like doofus gets old after a while. A few minutes of Ashton in “That 70s Show” was often hilarious. But 90 minutes of that character is a bore.
2)So far, he hasn’t shown any range. I KNOW that the real Ashton Kutcher is a smart guy, but he hasn’t shown any ability to PLAY a smart guy on screen. I KNOW that he’s capable of charming and seducing women in real life… but he’s shown NO ability to convey that charm or seductiveness on screen.
In short, he’s very good at playing Kelso, but that’s about the ONLY character I’ve seen him portray effectively. He tends to come across as Kelso in EVERYTHING he plays.
I won’t state categorically that he has no talent. Other actors I thought had no talent turned out to be very good when they got to chance to do a role that stretched them. MAYBE Ashton Kutcher will do something unexpectedly great some day, just as Rob Lowe did.
But so far, I haven’t seen it. Which means that, for the foreseeable future, I’ll blow off any coming movie that he stars in.
Full dsiclosure: I actually like Punk’d.
HOWEVER, I agree that he’s the biggest raging douchebag on that show, and I think the hatred and ill-will that show generates for him is pretty well deserved.
