There have been 2 recent spam threads, well 1 deleted, and the other is ‘reported’ and pending mod review on basically the concept that Chrome browser has a problem, and with a link to a site to fix it. The normal new poster with post count 1. Googling the subject indicates many like threads all over the place.
What is going on here? Obviously it’s a attempt to click bait, but to what ends?
My guess is that the point is just to drive up traffic to that blog. The spams are talking about the risks of Chrome, because that’s the article on the blog right now.
I could just be an issue of Chrome being a popular web browser. You’re not going to get much attention for your scam if you’re warning people of a danger on Mosaic or Netscape.
Agreed. It’s like getting a call from Microsoft or Visa or Time Warner Cable. If someone says that they’re with one of those companies, there’s a 50% chance (give or take) that the person answering the phone will think ‘I have time warner cable, so that makes sense’.
A relative of mine went to her grave 100% convinced that Time Warner Cable called her and locked her computer and it was totally legit that they wanted $100 to fix it.
No amount of explaining could convince her otherwise. No matter what anyone said (even when she called TWC and they explained the scam to her) she was still sure it was TWC because she had TWC and how else would they know.
Put up a popup that says 'click this link/download his software to fix your Chrome browser and a lot of people will be convinced it’s legit.
