Why the excessive quoting

Why do people feel the need to waste space on my monitor by quoting things written just above it on the SDMB? I mean really, take a look at this thread. Don’t you find this irritating?

Erm . . . for the sake of specificity, clarity, and understanding? Because it’s difficult to have a free and enlightening debate if I have no idea which of my ideas you’re trying to refute? Because otherwise there’s a lot of paraphrasing and things get confused?

I live in CA, and we have a big energy crisis going on, and never once has the power company come to my house and said, “Excuse me, 'phyt, I’m going to have to ask you to read in a smaller font. You’re using way more than your allotment of monitor space. I mean, all this twelve-point madness has caused the rest of your block radius to be compelled to read through a magnifying glass.”

I wasn’t particularly aware that “monitor space” was a particularly valuable commodity.

Oh, I see where the problem could be. Are you buying a new monitor each time one fills up? They’re not like paper, y’know. Each one can hold a more or less infinite amount of data, just not at once.

See that little thing on the right side of the screen? Y’know, the bar with the arrows pointing up and down? It’s called the scroll bar. By careful manipulation of your mouse, you can move the cursor over to it. Good job. Now, click on the button pointing down (toward your feet). Wonderful! See how the words on the screen move?

Sheesh.

I agree.

Just buy a larger monitor.

Here I am, in the orgasmic glare of a 21" monitor… ::drool::

But anyway… liken the Boards to a conversation. When talking to people in day-to-day life, you rarely hear someone make a 10-minute speech without other people joining in. Thoughts are limited to 3- or 4-sentence explanations before they’re brought off on another tangent.

When replying on a message board, we don’t reply to each post as a whole… we reply to each individual thought. And unless we quote what we’re replying to, we’re just talking to ourselves without fighting Ignorance very well.

Depends on what is being quoted.

Personally, I find it in bad taste to quote an entire post…but understand that runs along the lines of a huge post and not all of the post has anything to do with the concerns of the quotee (is that even a word?) and their response.

If you are trying to make points, it makes sense. If you have several posts you are trying to comment on, it makes sense.

Quotes can be over used, but most people here know the difference between overuse and a few just need to learn a little more.

Otherwise monitor space is just an excuse to whine about something.

This has been covered over and over again, even by me…you are just screeching about something that comes up about every three months or so.
