Why the salutes?

Several years ago I worked with a guy who would salute me when we met in a corridor. I thought it was a bit strange, since the closest I’ve ever been to being in uniform was being a “Navy brat” and being a 2LT in the Civil Air Patrol. Well, that guy was an interesting character anyway.

Now I’m in a different company and there’s a guy who insists on saluting me. I’ve let him know it bugs me, but he does it anyway. He says he respects my ability and knowledge of the work we do, and anyway I’m his team leader. But come on! It’s a little creepy.

Are there some people who just like to salute? Or is there something about me that makes them want to do so? Does this happen to anyone else who is not now and never was in the military?

Saluting’s not so bad, how about drunken handshakes? Any guy who’s drunk enough will shake your hand after every sentence! Now that’s creepy.

There’s some reason these people want to bug you.

Johnny, as long as he’s a good worker and respects you, I’d just let it go at that. If he likes saluting and it doesn’t interfere with business, I’d just drive on.

Something tells me that the color of the sky in his world may not the same as ours. If this guy’s ex-military and possibly owns many guns, then it might be better for you that he thinks you’re Douglas MacArthur instead of Ho Chi Minh.

Hope you don’t have to lay him off anytime soon!
