There is only one reason I see to cheer for a Trump victory: the head-exploding liberal reaction.
Unfortunately, this is akin to laughing at the water lapping at the feet of my opponent’s lifeboat bilge, and only then realizing that we share the same boat.
Decent points in the OP. But, those points don’t necessarily add up to a “best” President.
I’ve almost decided to vote for Trump in the upcoming primary just because: I JUST WANT TO SEE IT! At this point I’m just curious what the hell a Trump presidency would look like. We’ve pretty much seen the likes of Rubio and Cruz and Kasich and Clinton in the White House. . . you might could say the same for Sanders, “I just want to see it.”
Good thing you acknowledge you are not well aware, but in reality Trump started going to Arpaio’s hateful rallies in Arizona, even after both Republican senators from Arizona advised all candidates not to do so.
And to do that Trump had to willfully(?) ignore that Arpaio had already been found by the courts that his department had used racial profiling. At the time Trump came to kowtow Arpaio, he was back in court for trying to go around the deal made before to address that racial profiling issue. Trump must also love how Arpaio even investigated the relatives of the judge that is preceding in his current case in a clear attempt to intimidate the judge.
It is clear that prejudiced authoritarians love each other.
This sentence is delusional. All humans are capable of all human behavior. That you think Democrats are some kind of magical creatures shows your bias.
What’s more scary than that, and more scary than the OPs theory that the real Donald would govern differently than the candidate Trump is that there is seemingly a large segment of Republican voters who WANT the persona. It’s hard for me to even fathom. I mean, I can see why the lefties are going for Sanders on the Democratic side, but Trump?? I just don’t get it.
I suppose the one point in here I can sort of buy (besides the assertion that he’ll run to the center once elected…that’s pretty much what I expect most of them to do, with the exception of Bernie and perhaps Cruz) is that Trump, unlike any of the other potential Republican presidential candidates, probably would be more willing to work through consensus than stick to hard core party politics. He’d most likely be willing and possibly even able to work WITH the Democrats in congress to actually get stuff done. The problem is that where we are today, doing that would basically alienate his own party…and, the thing is, like Bernie I think he would start as basically an outsider with little political capital or his own party backing him. It’s pretty obvious that the Republican establishment is horrified by the idea of Trump in the drivers seat, and I think that will translate to pretty anemic backing from his own party, let alone from the Dems. He will be Carter but without any of Carters few pluses…so I think your theory he’d be the best president ever is fatally flawed right there.
I disagree most with point (4). I think Trump is acutely concerned with his public image and of what people think about him, evident in his tendency to be thin-skinned and vindictive, e.g. in his tweets, where he often comes across like a dimwitted class bully struggling to respond in kind to an insult that went over his head. As such, he appeals in large part to others who are also thin-skinned and vindictive, or who wish they had the nerve and the opportunity to be.
I don’t consider being thin-skinned and vindictive a virtue, and I certainly don’t want someone with those traits to have the power of the Presidency.
A Democrat may be capable of this behavior. * Democrats* collectively have values, social institutions, and voter bases incompatible with strict obstructionism. They may make other stupid decisions, but the Dems grinding government to a halt out of spite is not something that will ever happen.
Yeah, but two years in or so he’ll discover that you can’t get out of the disaster he caused by declaring bankruptcy. Maybe he’d do a Palin because the press and Congress disrespect him.
Let me clarify #4. Trump has a carefully honed public image and it doesn’t bother him that people think he is a bully vindictive asshole that everyone should kowtow to*. In fact he WANTS the public to think that’s him.
I actually wince when on CA some big name celebrity is gushing “Oh you’re the greatest Mr. Trump. I want to learn from you Mr. Trump.”
He says he is an outsider, who is not controlled by special interests; because he is a special interest!
Tea Party conservatives keep saying they are tired of politicians that promise them they will successfully address their issues, then never do it. So why do they keep electing liars? Because they just won’t vote for someone who tells the truth. They are begging to be lied to, then astonished when they get screwed again.
