why was welcome back kotter taken off the air?

Everyone loved the show. Does anyone know of any plans for re-runs,(not short term things or maratons).

It is actually quite interesting what happened…

To make a long story short (I’ll have to use character names as I forgot the actors/actresses who played them.)

First with Vinnie departing it brought the show down. Then the producer and Gabe got into it over creative differences. Now normally this would be bad enuff but Julie didn’t like being used just for “Gee Gabe what happened next.” and complained up a storm.

So basically you had a lot of tension on the set.

When a second banana and a producer don’t like the star it is usually the star who goes but the powers that be figure this was an ensamble(SP?) cast and they could do withour KOTTER??

You will notice in the last season he is written out of a lot of scripts. Julie went to work at the school and Gabe was off lecturing or something… Gabe Kaplan in real life was having a great sucess in stand up and starting movies so he didn’t care. Also Horeshack(SP?) was emerging as the breakout character (after Vinny left) and the writers could’t write well for him. The character was supposed to be weak and in the backround not the star that he became.

This ruined the show for as funny as Vinnie and the rest of the cast was it WAS Welcome Back KOTTER.

So basically it was a lesson in the star doesn’t always win as well as how to ruin a show.

But then again ABC recently just ruined their top 10 hit show Angie and was on a role

OOPS What I meant to say is it is NOT usually the star who goes. Sorry
