Why won't they let "Friends" die?

I used to enjoy this show before I got a life (i.e., grew up, no insults intended) , but now I find I have nothing in common with the characters and pretty much think they’re a bunch of idiots.

I’d say I could give it a chance, but I won’t actually set time aside to watch it, so whatever.

By the by, I did enjoy The Whole Nine Yards.

I enjoy the show, I also think it should stop. I was very surprised to hear they were having another season. I don’t think it is as good as it used to be, but it gets some laughs out of me and that’s all I ask for!

I’ve watched it since Day One.
I think the trick is that the characters are now so well-defined, you can get a laugh with a look, with a nod and a subtle reference to the character’s past. A new sitcom has to set up the scene… when Monica’s out of the room, move her vase three inches on the coffee table or break a teacup…the audience can laugh knowing how the character Monica is GOING to react.
Storylines can be written in shorthand, because just like in real life, you know what buttons to push with a Friend and how far you can push them to create a situation.

The show is the perfect combination of good writing and perfect casting. As long as the writing stays up to par (and so far this year it has), and the cast stays together (and even they aren’t stupid enough to turn down $1million per week) the show will stay a hit.

So - it will cost $100 million and change for the next 18 episodes of Friends (approx 9 hours airtime)…“Waterworld” cost twice as much for just a couple of hours of film…“Battlefield Earth” cost about $50 million plus…even Pauly Shore films cost more than a weekly episode of Friends:
Which would you rather see?

I have been a fan since day one, too - it started at a time when it seemed there were no tv shows reflecting what was going on in the lives of me and my GenX friends (and let’s just state for the record here that GenX is the generation of people just after the Boomers, not kids in their teens). I am preparing to quit watching once the Plot Contrivance (AKA “The Baby”) takes over the show. And I’m getting pretty sick of the self-centred bitchiness of Monica and Rachel. Could someone please call them on this someday?

I have been a fan for ages but I can’t watch it any more. It has jumped the shark…literally. I mean shark porn? C’mon.

And featherlou I’d argue that Phoebe is the bitch. She used to be wacky. Now she’s mean.

Twiddle

Um… I thought the shark porn bit was hilarious.

Actually, I think you’re right, Twiddle - all the girls are mean now.

It can end just as soon as Rachel and Ross get together. I’ve invested a lot of years in these people and they better finish what they started. After that, it’ll be like your old high school crew. It will be fun catching up on them on the occasional rerun.

I always thought there could be a lot of good shows written around Joey’s sisters. The Rachel & Ross connection isn’t that far off… remember the episode where Ross walks into the bathroom while Rachel’s taking a shower? She was um… ‘testing’ the shower massager. Of course we’re all still waiting on the Joey/Phoebe connection.

E3

Even though the producers are paying $1mil per cast member again for the upcoming season, the income from commercials doesn’t cover the $10 per episode NBC is paying to keep Friends on the schedule. In fact last season NBC paid $3 mil less per episode and lost money too. I read that the audience scragglers who are too lazy to switch stations once Friends is over on Thursday evenings make it supposedly worth paying big money to keep the show on the air.

You mean to tell me that NBC can’t field the ten bucks per episode?! Maybe we can get a mason jar out and let folks donate if they want to.

Friends reminds me of the camera shop across from my husband’s apartment in Manhattan. It had huge yellow “Going Out of Business!” signs. Two years later, the camera shop was still “Going Out of Business!” and it finally dawned on me that they had no intention of closing their doors. It was all just a marketing ploy.

Now we get to listen to another round of “They’ve been your friends for 10 years. You’ve watched them through their ups and downs. It’s time to part ways. Enjoy the final season.” ads.

Im glad it’s not going to die…not yet anyways! I have been a watcher sincer day one! I use to have a roommate who was just like Pheobe…what a riot!

For those of you not into it…suck it up…there are many other channels and shows out there for you to watch!..like that new reality show coming out that is set up like “the Bachelor”, but they tell the girls that guy has inherited 50 million from his grandfather…they play it out to the end, and then when he makes his choice WHAM…it was all a lie…and he only actually makes 19 thousand a year!!! OUCH! All to see if she is in for money or love…

Arent our TV programs great…Friends is sounding better and better now isnt it!!!

Do you have an actual cite for that? Or is it just your opinion?
