I thought it was over. I prayed it was over. And now it isn’t over?
Why doesn’t NBC just accept that this show’s time has past?People watch it out of routine, not becuase it is funny. They can’t kick the habit even though the last time the show was funny was when nobody knew that Chandler and Monica were sleeping together. The show has degenerated into a parody of itself; why people still like it is beyond me.
And I hate the stupid cast for continually whoring themselves out for this show. Granted, they will never succeed in anything else but can they just keep their promise and let this unfunny show die the death that it deserves? Can they at least stop pretending that it will end, giving false hope to billions? Even worse, they are on Entertainment Tonight/Access Hollywood/Extra every day saying how it is “time to move on” but they keep coming back.
But worst of all:
David Schwimmer makes $1 million an episode? Huh?
I liked this show once upon a time but now it is impossible to watch. And I can’t stand the incestuous plotlines of every castmember dating/loving/marrying/fucking the other. And I hate their commercials that market it as a drama or something. Please kill this stupid show sometime before they turn forty. Oh wait, they are already there. Pathetic.
Geez, for that half-hour every week you can tend your plants or feed your pets or play with your children.
Or just watch another channel.
As for the cast, none of them seems likely to go on to a major film or post-Friends television career (Lisa Kudrow might do okay in supporting roles) so they should get as much money as they can, while they can.
Just another sad indication of the state of affairs in our popular culture. Compared to “Survivor Borneo” and “Anna Nicole” Friends is a time honored institution. I’m starting to think the tv execs are delusional. So sad. The lunatics have taken over the asylum.
I am pleased that it is continuing another season. Not because I enjoy it anymore, but because it provides an EXCELLENT lead-in for Scrubs. Anything that keeps that show’s ratings healthy is something worth celebrating.
If I was a television actor, and I made a million bucks per week, I would let them have my show only when they pried it from my cold, dead fingers.
Aside from that, though, I always figured they can’t rightly cancel the show until they run through every permutation of the characters sleeping with each other.
I want to see Joey, Ross, and Chandler have a threesome. The hilarious hijinks that ensue when the three of them try to keep their affair secret will produce hours of classic television programming!
Exactly. Popular culture being what it is, the girls getting together will happen first, of course. But that’ll give them several seasons right there, and the shocked gasps round the country, predictable boycott attempts and so forth will drive the ratings through the roof. Once those seasons are truly underway, then they may be able to start floating Joey-on-Ross-on-Chandler test balloons.
I think the OP is just a knee-jerk reaction to the age of the show. I am far from being alone in the opinion that the writing is just as sharp, probably sharper, than it has ever been in the entire run of the show. The characters are not and have never been like most sitcome characters, mere mouthpieces for the gags. They are extremely well-drawn, very distinct and very funny whole people, and the humor springs naturally from that fact.
It is truly remarkable, because almost no television show can hold the standard of quality that this show has, much less improve upon it.
And I am very happy to get another year of it, since there are very few shows worth watching, and this is one of my favorites. (The others, for comparison purposes, are, in no particular order: * Sopranos, Sex & the City, Oz, Six Feet Under, ER, West Wing, Buffy the Vampire Slayer * and * Angel. * These are the only shows that qualify as “appointment television” for me. And ER is not what it was, it’s something different now, but I like it anyway. I used to make it a point to watch * The Practice * but that’s fallen apart I think.)
By the way, regarding the money… I don’t think that’s a major factor for the 6 stars. They are all insanely rich already. I think they feel the way a whole bunch of us feel: it’s still fun, it’s still rewarding, it’s still great TV, why bail?
*Tonight, on a very special episode of Friends, Ross and Monica realize their feelings for one another have never been stronger…
That “Nap” episode already floated the idea!
Is it true that they deny you the right to vote if you don’t have a TV?
Reasonable minds can disagree. My wife and I are big Friends fans from way back, but this season has been wholly uninspired. We continue to watch more because of nostalgia. I can laugh at things because I have so much “invested” in the characters, but if it were a script for a new sitcom, I would say the material is fit for the WB or UPN.
Fo me, other than Joey- who has been excellent, this season’s humor has been relying on the viewers past enjoyment of the show.
That said, if I were the cast , the Production Company, or NBC, I’d suck that well dry. They have all made a fortune off this cash cow, but more is always better.
I only hope they break out a new show to go along with it and Scrubs on Thursday.
Will and Grace has JTS and Good Morning, Miami belongs on the USA Network or something.
Incidentally, somewhere along the line, David Schwimmer ceased to exist. He can now only be known as “Ross from Friends”. I realized this when seeing “Six Days and Seven Nights”, which, incidentally, was pretty damn turgid a film.
Last season, OTOH, was one of the best ever. Even though this year has been less than stellar, the fact the writers could come up with last season at that late stage suggests that it isn’t impossible for it to happen again next year.
