Sometimes I fantasize about installing a water cannon or a paintball gun.
A better example would be the movie Death Race 2000.
There are plenty of plain old car air horns one can get. They may not be as loud, but you don’t have to have an elaborate set up either.
In my city (not a large city, probably barely large enough for that classification), people tend to speed a lot. People also tend to simply walk in the middle of the road. There’s a certain stretch through town where people will literally simply walk out into the middle of the street without looking to see if any cars are coming. Stroller first - right there pushing baby ahead of them into traffic. There’s no median or divider other than the double yellow line, but they’ll stand there if they feel like stopping. The speed limit is 30 but people often go 40.
All the time people will walk in the street as well. There’s a sidewalk, open and clean, then a few loosely parallel parked cars (i.e. they don’t block walking access between the road and the sidewalk), and then there’s them, in the street. What the heck! And it’s never just them alone. They’re always sauntering along going the same direction as traffic, a pack of two or three, giving the “ugh” look as a car passes them closely because there’s no room. I just can’t understand why you would walk there. Are you trying to look badass by playing chicken with cars? Are you too idiotic to notice the sidewalk 8 feet to your right? Are sidewalks for losers? Are you doing a power play by making cars avoid you?
I too sometimes dream about one of those train air horns.
Sounds more like Carmageddon to me.
You are a much nicer person than me. I usually fantasize about lethal ordinance, both anti-personnel and anti-vehicle. But I’m a bad person.
In some communities such as those which have home owners associations people buy into those partly because it is different then the normal outside world. Cars are here secondary and allowed for convenience, but that entire area is open for the community - it is common land.
Bullshit(as usual). Show me a homeowners association contract that says that cars must share the roads equally with pedestrians, where cops can’t tell a group of people walking down the middle of the road when vehicles are trying to get through to get their asses back on the sidewalk. Cite it or shut it.
The OP specified it was sidewalks in an apartment complex in the morning when kids were waiting for the school bus.
I truly doubt at that place and time the sidewalks were full of all those things.
Cite that cites are required in the Pit or shut it.
Cite that he doesn’t have a long history of claiming all sorts of shit without ever backing it up. I want to see this neighborhood where cars legally share the road equally with pedestrians.
I think pedestrians can be dealt with using non-lethal force. But sometimes I would really like to have a Somalia-style technicalto take out a bus or taxi that’s weaving erratically around on the road ahead of me.
To be fair, the street in question may be a Woonerf, or local equivalent thereof. But I doubt it.
For the record, there was (an always is) tons of room on the sidewalks – room enough for everyone waiting for the bus. The residents of this complex just seem to prefer to spread themselves over sidewalk and street.
Just this morning, I saw folks walking right next to the sidewalk, obviously on the way to the bus stop or to their own cars. They were walking NEXT to the completely open, non-bumpy, well-kept sidewalks.
I’m not saying that the poster you are responding to is right or wrong, but such spaces do exist. Exhibition Road in South Kensington, London is a “shared space”. There is no traditional pavement/road demarcation, and certain motor vehicles (at reduced speed;10mph I think), bicycles and pedestrians can all use the road freely.
I’ve driven down it myself and it’s quite an interesting experience. Everyone seems to be able to share the road quite equitably and amiably. I think mainly due to the lack of certainty as to who has right of way (answer; everyone!)
Difficult to provide cite while posting from phone, but Google “exhibition road shared space”
Exhibition road shared space is something new to England, but hasn’t taken hold in the U.S., although in West Palm Beach there are spots where they have removed most traffic signs, closing the space between the cars and the pedestrians.
I can confirm that these roads in the apartment complex are not Woonerfs.
Never assume what another person’s awareness level is. Being in an enclosed space like a car, it seems pretty natural to think that those people out there are similarly separated from the environment when I suspect that most of the time they are not. I have encountered this while riding a bicycle, that motorists think I am not aware that they are there.
Some people are just straight-up assholes, but many are unintentionally being troublesome. Among the latter case, expressing your fury at them furiously is likely to result in backlash and propagation of peevishness. You are more likely to get lasting positive results by explaining your issue in a non-hostile way. Honking, yelling and bird-flipping may well make the crowd at the bus stop develop into a worse problem for you in the future.
Unless you are saying that ignoring them will solve the problem(it won’t), then what solutions do you propose?
I never said I was going to honk and yell and bird flip, of course. Other posters have suggested that, but that is not my plan. I also don’t plan to speak with them in a non-hostile way. What would I do, gather them all up and speak to them through a megaphone?
