Why Would Anyone WANT Fruit-On-the-Bottom Yogurt?

For a while, in the not-too-distant past, Dannon® was the only yogurt that had its fruit on the bottom of the container. Thus you had to mix it in yourself, unless you were fond of plain yogurt followed by fruit in syrup. Then more recently other yogurt companies started putting their fruit on the bottom. Fine, more work for us consumers, I guess.

But I just noticed more recently that at least one yogurt company is doing something weird. They are giving you the choice between the two.

Does this mean that there are some people who would enjoy yogurt this way? Why? And why would the yogurt company put its fruit on the bottom to begin with? I had always assumed they did this just because they were lazy. Or perhaps they wanted to show off their yogurt by itself first or something.

Does anyone know?

I like to mix it up myself . . . make raspberry swirl patterns and stuff. Also, the fruit on the bottom allows one to adjust the yogurt-fruit mix meal to meal.

I like it with Grape Nuts.

Moderator’s Note: Off to IMHO.

First, your assertion that Dannon (used to be Danon in some regions) was the only fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt is wrong.

Secondly, aside from trying to make a point of your prejudices, is there any reason why you would pollute GQ with this?

they probably save at least 100 million dollars a year by not pre-mixing the yogurt and fruit. they somehow managed to convince people that this cost-cutting measure is a “feature” in their product. I’ve never understood it either. I just buy yoplait which is pre-mixed. Sure, ya pay a premium… but it’s worth the spared mixing effort imo.

Drat. Guess my 2nd point doesn’t make sense after that simul-post. :smack:

Because it lets you see exactly how much fruit there is. I’d also guess that there is more actual fruit (rather than artificial flavoring and food coloring) in FOTB yogurt, judging by the taste.

I greatly prefer FOTB yogurt. It’s so much more like real food, actual yogurt + actual (say) peaches, rather than bright orange-colored artifically peach-flavored yogurt. Ewwww.

That’s MHO, of course.

Dannon is the one to start this? I remember fruit-on-the-bottom store brand yogurt when I was a kid (early 80’s).

If I have to eat cheap store brand yogurt, I’ll get the fruit on the bottom kind, eat the yogurt and toss the fruit. They’re always made too sweet, but the yogurt already has some fruit flavor infused into it, so it’s about right without the extra fruit stirred in.

OTOH, Continental yogurt has only fruit on the bottom, and it’s actually good sweetened fruit with plain yogurt, and tastes good stirred in.

Mmmm…I haven’t had yogurt in a long time. I love it.

I actually like to eat the yogurt, and then eat the fruit on the bottom. It’s kinda like getting dessert after the yogurt. I don’t mix it in at all. That’s why I prefer fruit on the bottom.

I did that when I was little and my parents were big believers in giving very, very little refined sugar. The fruit/syrup of fruit-at-bottom yogurt was the closest I got to sweets on a semi-regular basis.
Now, that I can eat sugar whenever I want, I like Yoplait.

'Cause it’s better, that’s why.

Lemme explain. Yoghurt in itself is acidic in taste. The fruitstuff is very sweet. Pre-blended youghurt is very sweet and really doesn’t taste youghurt - it’s more like a slightly acid milkshake.

Now, with the layers separated, a connoisseur such as self can get a spoonful of youghurt, with a twirls of fruit, enjoying the harscher, acid taste of the yoghurt, with a slight touch of the fruity sweetness.
It’s better becuase you get two sensations of taste, instead of just one.

Absolutely; it’s like having ice cream with hot fudge sauce; the juxtaposition of two different sensations that you wouldn’t get if they were homogenously mixed.

Because it allows people to remove some of the overly-sweet fruit before enjoying the yoghurt. I wish they’d put less fruit in or put the fruit on top so that the excess can be disposed of.

I also enjoy FOTB yogurt so much better than pre mixed stuff. For one thing, it just tastes better. I also think a big part of it for me is the texture: FOTB yogurt is considerably thicker than the pre-mixed stuff. I don’t like runny yogurt.

Jman

I can taste preservatives in the food I eat. I won’t eat most hostess snacks and Pop tarts because of this. Mixed in yogurt has this taste, so I don’t so near it.

When I was a kid, we would open the container of FOTB yogurt and turn it upside down on our plate. Then, we would pierce the bottom of the container with our fork and lift it away.

Voila! a container-shaped lump of yogurt covered with fruit topping! Our parents told us it was just like a sundae. Well, we weren’t that dumb, but it was fun in any case (especially the part about stabbing things with our fork).

I prefer the fruit on the bottom yogurt. When it is all mixed together it becomes some other form of nastiness. I like the taste of plain yogurt too but it has a bit of a bite after several spoonfuls and the fruit on the bottom manages to cut it just enough. For what it is worth, I typically don’t eat all of the jam that is at the bottom either. That stuff is just too sweet.

I agree and would like to add: I hate pre-mixed yoghurt like Yoplait. I find it soupy like melted ice cream. I like the acid taste of the plain yo and then the burst of flavour at the end of my spoon when I dig down to the bottom.

I personally prefer the FOTB yogurt. Very nice solid consistency instead of some runny crud.
