Dannon yogurt scarce?

Hello Everyone,

I went shopping at Wally World with Mrs. OBBN tonight and while going down the refrigerated isle thought I would pick up some yogurt, the fruit on the bottom kind. It’d been quite a while since I’ve bought some and my preferred brand is Dannon, but there wasn’t a single package to be found. In fact I can’t recall seeing it in quite sometime. Is Dannon still around or has Wally World stopped carrying it? I seem to regiment last time I was at Publix i didn’t see Any there either. I’m in central Florida (Orlando) area if that makes a difference.

Are you looking for the Greek kind? I don’t recall seeing the regular kind recently, but LOVE the Greek kind - and it is in a different shaped container - so your brain may have ignored it. Don’t think I’ve had trouble finding it here (but usually only look in one store).

Not sure of exact difference between Greek and regular, but the Greek is fruit on the bottom as well - and I think if you liked the other one (which I used to get) - you’ll like this as well.

ETA:

Looks like they still make it (since 1942!), but it too is in a different looking container than I remembered…

Oh - and they have a store locator too…

They not only still make it, it’s a special this week at my local supermarket. Perhaps your local Wallyworld stopped carrying it .

I was about to correct your spelling and say it’s not Dannon, but Danone, but it seems they use that spelling in the US. Weird.

Yogurt has exploded (HA!) in the past several years with new varieties and features, partly because of the newly-discovered focus on probiotics. Your store only has so much space on a given refrigerated shelf, so they may have nixed the old-school Dannon for one of the newer varieties.

The whey is strained from the Greek yogurt, and that’s the difference. In spite of that, Greek contains
more protein, probably from the casein and small quantities of other milk proteins.

The store I work at doesn’t stock classic Dannon (which I recall being the “default” brand of yogurt when I was a kid) at all - we only carry their Greek yogurt and the low-fat kind.

This may be treading into IMHO territory, but…

What is the difference between fruit-on-the-bottom and the pre-mixed varieties? Is it largely a consumer prefrence thing or are there manufacturing advantages to not pre mixing?

I was once horrified as a child to find a murky grey goo at the bottom of my yogurt cup. I had never seen the fruit-on-the-bottom variety before, and although I picked a peach flavor, I didn’t notice that the yogurt was more like the vanilla that I loved… until I hit that “fruit”. I can not, and will not buy peach yogurt or anything fruit-on-the-bottom ever again because of this.

Fruit on the bottom… are we talking real fruit pieces?

Let’s move this to Cafe Society.

No! Walmart does NOT sell classic fruit-on-the-bottom or blended yogurt, and it’s a major pain in the ass. They sell Yoplait and I don’t know what that other stuff is. Not everyone adores the Greek yogurt. I have to make an extra stop at the ONE grocery store that does stock regular Dannon. I need my pina colada fruit on the bottom!

It’s a layer of chunky jam.

which is what?

Fruit puree and sugar, possibly with added pectin.

I can only think of one store in my area that carries regular classic fruit-on-the-bottom Dannon. Everything else is Greek yogurt and maybe a couple of slots of Activia.

Yeah, the regular yogurt is getting harder to find, thanks to the Greek yogurt craze. I can’t stand that stuff, and it’s crowding out my favorite brands and varieties. Damn those Greeks. Can’t wait until the fad passes.

Greek yogurt tastes great. Our local stores sell a lot of the regular, but I always get Greek.

I think Greek yogurt sometimes tastes like chalky thick sour cream. Yoplait is candy flavored fluff. Dannon fruit on the bottom has been my favorite since I first bought pineapple-fruit-on-the-bottom for 25 cents back in the early 70’s.

A coworker make me a big thing of Greek yogurt. It’s horrible by itself. But add in some fresh pineapple? Oh my god. Amazing.
