Wierd City Names

I neglected another one…

Ralph, Saskatchewan. Last I checked, official population was 6. Course, that was over 5 years ago.

Onancock, VA.

Calcium, Lyme, Rust. Which of these is not a small town in Northern NY?

that would be rust. Calcuium and Lyme are close to Watertown NY.

There is also Immokalee FL.

Near where my parents live (and where I grew up), there is a town called Ramsbottom. This never fails to illicit a chuckle from people.

This is one of the few regrets about living in Hawaii. No funny names. Or maybe there are some and I just don’t know the translation. All we got is Kaaawa. There are two glottal stops between those 3 As.

Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

Gotta throw in another shameless plug for Felch, Michigan. Adjacent to Felch Mountain, of course.

Toad Suck, Arkansas

Booger Hollow, Arkansas

They’re both lovely.

In what used to be Haldimand County in Ontario, Canada, just outside of Hagersville, there used to be a gas station/store and a house or two, with an official place name sign on either side of the road. It was called Dogsnest. It’s been absorbed by what is referred to as the City of Townsend (which is not a city at all - it takes into account the entire population of small towns and villages and farmland all over a very wide area).

Sugar Tit, SC

Nor Floyds Knobs, IN, near Louisville.

I also nominate Bucksnort TN; and in Virginia Beach (VA) there’s Witchduck Road…

How could I forget? Richmond VA has a suburb named Short Pump

Soddy Daisy, TN.

In Marine boot camp there was a candidate named Rainville and he was from Watertown, NY.

My nomination is Old Dime Box, TX which is not far from “Dime Box, TX”.

The community I live in used to be called “Frog Level”, but is now Pratts possibly because there is a “Frog Island” close by.

North of here there is a town named Rienzi which was originally named “Cincinnati”. The name change was made because they thought that some people would confuse it with Cincinnati, OH. [sup]Yeah, sure they would[/sup]

Oops, I almost forgot!

Out near Chilliwack, there’s an unincorporated area called Popkum! The two together sound kind of…

I can’t believe no one has posted Intercourse, PA

In Mass we have a lake with the longest name. It is called Lake Webster, but it’s Indian name is

Lake CHARGOGGAGOGGMANCHAUGGAUGGAGOGGCHAUBUNAGUNGAMAUGG

It basically means “You fish on your side, I fish on my side, and nobody fishes in the middle!”

In New South Wales:

Wagga Wagga, Woodenbong, Balls Head, Come By Chance, and of course, Woolloomooloo.

When my mother’s family first came to this country from Switzerland, they settled in Boogertown, TN. Happily, we’ve moved on since then.

I’m glad to see Ralph, Saskatchewan mentioned, along with all the others, but a little disappointed that Radville was missed. Like, totally, man!

Skullbone, Tennessee is about ten miles as the buzzard flies from where I grew up:

The store in the picture is probably the only business in the community, but they sell doodle soup and great t-shirts. It was known for bare-fisted fighting and country music before Nashville could carry a tune.
