Will anybody know who Tom Cruise is 50 years from now?

Ok, so he’s made maybe three good movies.

Is this enough to make him a Cinema Superstar?

Or when all is said and done, will he become just another obscure Tab Hunter-type character, as I think he will?

Nah, he will probably have some recognition. He will have movies on the future AMC, where the announcer will talk about his career, divorce, and tragic death in 2010.

nobody will remember him. imho he is simply a bad actor. a good actor makes me forget who he actually is - i never see anybody else than Tom Cruise on the screen. and Tom Cruise is a somewhat uninteresting person, no charisma at all!!

Ever hear of Spencer Tracy? He died 34 years ago. Gary Cooper? He died in 1961, 40 years ago. Clark Gable? He’s been dead 41 years. Leslie Howard? Dead 59 years come June. Carole Lombard? She died in 1942, nearly 60 years ago.

My point is that the more famous actors tend to live on in public memory for a long time. Tom is alive yet, and has made a number of movies that were really very popular. He may not be well known among the young people of 2050, but I think the slightly older set will remember him.

And I’m aware that I listed Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and Leslie Clark, who all have close connections, but I had a hard time putting together this list - I didn’t know where to find information on when popular actors died!

Even at the height of his popularity, Tab Hunter never began to approach the popularity of Tom Cruise. NONE of Tab Hunter’s movies was a smash hit on the level of “Top Gun,” so the comparison is silly.

Mind you, that’s NOT to say that Cruise is a brilliant actor, merely that he’s an amazingly POPULAR actor.

As such, yes, he’ll be remembered 50 years from now. Heck, people remember LOTS of 1940s and 1950s stars whose movies aren’t particularly well respected today.

Enquiring minds want to know which three you have in mind…
