Will I be able to jump into American Horror Story: Freak Show tonight?

Yeah. I think it was you who pointed out that the state of Louisiana took her slaves away. How bad do you have to be for antebellum Louisiana to say you can’t own slaves?

Damn it, I missed this! Was it scary? Was it creepy? I heard a promo say that they were going for the scariest clown ever filmed, did it live up to the hype??

I will say that I cannot think of a scarier one that has ever been on film.

The way it just came shambling along on a beautiful sunny day…good God above. Unspeakable.

I think Kathy Bates accent is supposed to be Baltimore. Or. “Ball’mer, hon.”

Travokta was supposed to be Baltimore in HAIRSPRAY. Maybe they have the same coach. Anybody have any idea if some Baltimoreans really sound like that?

I was born and raised in Baltimore.

Her accent at first jumped out as Baltimorean to me because of the way that she pronounced her long O as almost like a long A–a defining characteristic of the white blue collar Baltimore accent. But the rest of her accent seemed to come from a different place–it was kind of confusing.

(When I was an undergrad at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, I knew a fellow student who took a great interest in that accent. His prized document was a piece of early sheet music from Baltimore which was phonetically written in that accent. It was ostensibly called “Home” but in the title and lyrics, it was spelled “Hame.”)

Thoughts on Lange’s Marlene Dietrichy LIFE ON MARS?

I thought I heard some of her native Southern accent slipping through at times.

Seems like a good start to the season. That clown was one of the creepiest things I’ve ever seen. Also wonderfully done with it coming out of the woods, and everything looked beautiful with the lake and greenery and the girl in her brightly colored clothes and then the clown walking up. That also reminded me of True Detective, when the guy is spotted walking with the gas mask.

Have you seen Season 3? If you haven’t, then just a fair warning that a lot of people were disappointed by it. I didn’t hate it like a lot of people did, but I didn’t think it was good as the first two seasons.

I thought it was wonderful. Nothing can ever beat The Name Game from Asylum, but that was pretty great.

This was weird. I found it a bit harder to get into compared to previous seasons.

They kept introducing a mystery or problem then (almost) immediately solving it or answering it. Odd.

The clown in broad daylight was surely intentional, normally these types of things happen to teens at night… The image of the clown lumbering/shuffling after the injured girl stuck with me.

I did not really care for Jessica Lange’s German accent.

I loved the Freakshow Orchestra. (Reminded me a bit of the Groovy Ghoulies from Saturday mornings in the '70s.)

And no offense intended to Little People, but the tiny woman (sorry- don’t know her name) is FREAKING ADORABLE!!!

IMHO, yes - I’ve never been scared by, or freaked out by, a clown, but this one was truly creepy and terrifying. In case you don’t want to spoil it, further comments in spoiler tags:

There’s a scene with Twisty the clown in his abandoned trailer in the woods, and he has two children held hostage in cages. He’s torturing them, not with pain, but with terror. He’s throwing things at their cages and making unrecognizable noises. It was disturbing to watch.

Season 2 was terrific until the Misty situation in the 7 wonders competition.

Jessica Lange asking, "Is this knotty pahn!?"made the whole season worth it to me.

The girl was a sexually active teen and sexually active teens must be terrorized and/or killed in horror shows and movies.

I just can’t get over Jessica Lange. My wife loves this series. I tried, via Netflix, to watch it starting with the first season and Jessica Lange just irritated me so badly I couldn’t get into the show at all. I stopped after 2 episodes but mentally, I was checked out and uninterested before the first episode was even half-way done.

So fast forward to this premier and the topic of circus freaks and my interest is peaked. So we watched it off DVR last night and yea… 10-15 minutes in and I knew it just wasn’t for me. Twisty the clown? Awesome! The siamese twins? Awesome! Lobster boy? Meh, okay. The tiny lady? Awesome! Jessica Lange’s horrible accent and lack of enunciation to her words making it almost impossible to understand what the hell was being said? No. Jessica Lange’s gawd-awful attempt to sing which only brought laughter to my lips as I realized it was like a poor attempt to rip off Madeline Kahn from Blazing Saddles? Yeah, hell no… She just ruins it entirely for me. So terrible.

Like the show and appreciate what they are trying to do, but the siamese twins’ look just falls into that uncanny valley for me and kind of takes me out of the show when they are on-screen.

Different strokes eh? Mrs G and I both liked Season 3 the best. I felt Season 1 to be the weakest overall.

Ep. 1 thoughts…

– Agreed, creepiest clown ever. I’m wondering how much of the clown is mask/makeup and how much will actually be freak deformity.
– I loved the Life on Mars number. Brilliant!. The previews also showed a wonderful Fiona Apple number, I hope they have many more of these
– I didn’t quite get the reason for kidnapping and addicting the waitress into servitude, but hopefully that becomes apparent in later eps.
– The “flipper hands liberating the sexually repressed housewives” is hilarious. That part of the theme reminds me a lot of the over-the-topness of John Waters Crybaby.
– Most disturbing part to me was the stabbing method that the clown uses. Definitely not your typical movie stage-stabbing, felt very visceral and realistic.

But which season did Mr D like best? (sorry couldn’t resist the combo of Diff’rent Strokes and Mrs G there)
Anyway, I’m impressed, usually it takes until about 2/3rds of the way through the season for this show to go so far off the rails, but here’s they’ve done it with even having introduced the entire cast yet. Wonder what the hell is in the water they’re drinking where ever it is they make this show.

The trite cliche of a sexual woman needing to be punished by a serial killer should be beneath Ryan Murphy. But sadly it appears to be right in his wheelhouse.

That musical number was unwatchable. The douche chills overpowered me, forcing me to FFWD past that entire FABULOUS!!! song. Hopefully they tone down the musical theater, but I don’t have high hopes on that score.

That clown was the awesomest thing ever. He’s the Mayor of Awesometown. That alone has me hooked, though I’m quite liking everything except pretty much every moment Jessica Lange is on screen. Nothing against her personally; she was great in the first three seasons. But this whispery AARP poster child bleating about it not being too late to become a star and putting on the most embarrassing musical theater ever is just too much for me. I have a feeling I might be FFWDing through most of her scenes.

His shows are chock full of* 'oooo, having sexual feelings is so* naughty’!!! scenes and storylines.

So, yeah: one doesn’t go to Ryan Murphy for mature examination of the human condition.
