Will Republicans impeach Biden if they retake Congress?

What’s going to drive me nuts is when “centrists” defend the action, saying “well, you impeached their guy, they impeached your guy, you’re all the same.” I know it’s coming.

To be sure, of course, we libs can play the name-calling game too. How many names do we have, just on this Board, for His Orangeness Drumpf the Tangerine Turd? And “Empty” Greene? And Moscow Mitch? Name-calling is fun, when we do it, right? I have no problem with that.

Of course if the Republicans get a chance they’ll impeach Biden, but they won’t be able to convict for the same reason the Democrats couldn’t impeach Trump: lack of votes in the Senate.

What gets me is that there are dimwits who seem to think that if they remove Biden they automatically get Trump into the White House. No, they don’t. Remove Biden then Harris becomes President. They’ll have to get rid of her, which means another impeachment, good luck getting the votes for that. If by some anti-miracle the Republican do manage to impeach and remove Harris then either the newly-appointed Vice President will then be President (because I’d expect that process to get under way pronto) or, lacking a Vice President, it goes to the Speaker of the House which will either be Pelosi or, if the Democrats loose their majority, some Republican dude (I’m assuming dude, the odds tend to favor the person being a guy rather than a gal). Nevermind having to do all that in the two years before the next presidential election. Would that Republican Dude be Trump? Well… ordinarily I’d say no because there’s never been a Speaker who wasn’t already a member of the House when elected to that post but with Trump and his followers you just never know. However, I really suspect there are a LOT of people in this country who would be VERY unhappy with Trump finding a way into the White House in a manner that completely circumvents the electoral process.

So, the hypothetical is either Trump is elected Speaker of the House despite not being elected to the House (in which case the House will be the most inefficient it has ever been), by some anti-miracle Biden and Harris are both removed, and then Trump marches into the White House. If the latter happens our experiment in democracy is done. Expect either civil war or extreme repression of anyone not swearing personal loyalty to Trump.

IMHO this is the most important mid-term elections in my lifetime. Unfortunately, too many people disregard the mid-terms.

Why did it take so long to have a party that wants power at any cost rather than justly run the country? Is it all due to Trump sucking up to the great unwashed?

Uh… we got lucky?

It is remarkable it took this long.

Why not? The idea that the presidents party loses seats in the off year is not set in stone.

The GOP , if they win the House, which is possible but unlikely- may try to “Impeach”, but they know they can’t “convict/remove”. If they did “impeach” is just for revenge because the Dems impeached trump twice.

There is no possible way they can remove Biden.

If they have the Senate votes to get rid of Biden, why wouldn’t they have the senate votes to get rid of Harris?

But doesn’t a new VP have to be approved by the Senate? If the GOP has 67 votes to remove Biden, they’ll easily have enough votes to deny Harris’ nomination for new VP.

If the GOP has 67 Senate votes, the SotH would almost certainly be a Republican.

Yes, the whole scenario is bonkers. A one-vote GOP House Majority could (and probably will) impeach Biden, but without a two-thirds Senate majority nothing else happens. If by some anti-miracle they do have that majority, however, the other dominoes could easily fall.

Not only will they vote in the House to impeach Biden, I’m here to predict that they’ll go out of their way to impeach him three times. Why? So that, from now on, any time anyone mentions Trump being impeached twice, they can say, “So what? Biden got impeached three times and you don’t hear Democrats saying anything about that!

Of course they won’t ever discuss the circumstances of said impeachments.

Trump is a symptom rather than a cause. Of course, we’ve seen the Democratic Party of the pre-Civil War era led by Jefferson Davis, Stephen A. Douglas, John Breckenridge, and others willing to “take power at any cost” including the eventual succession over the legality of human slavery and emancipation, which Southern leaders promoted as essential to Souther industry and culture even though most white Southerners didn’t own slaves or materially benefit from the slave trade. The causes today are more complex but involve a similar alienation to the federal government, a ‘feeling’ of being oppressed, and fear of what might happen to their ‘culture’ as a result of recognizing and protecting civil rights of everyone.

“The great unwashed” are largely people who have been sidelined in the collapse of domestic industry, exploitation by the investment banking industry, the predatory corporate practices that have lead to corporate agribusiness, the opioid crises, and massive inflation of housing and real estate costs, and generally ignored by both major parties but particularly the formerly labor-friendly Democrats when they realized that electoral competition meant chasing corporate finance sources instead of representing the genuine interests of their actual constituents. It is not the simple, one-sided issue that people would like to believe, nor is it all just a “basket of deplorables” that are innately racist xenophobes.

Stranger

Out of curiosity, what are the “high crimes and misdemeanors” that they’d be impeaching Biden for?

Typically impeachment has to have some sort of public malfeasance- Watergate, messing around on your wife, insurrection, obstruction of Congress, etc…

I’m not seeing anything obvious that they can hang on Biden thus far, even if they exaggerate something far out of its actual importance.

Easy. Like @Horatius said, they will likely try to do it once each year until the 2024 election:

  1. Hunter Biden and kickbacks from Ukraine. It will be interesting to see how they tie that to actions during Biden’s presidency, but I don’t think that will slow them down.

  2. Immigration. This is perfect because it hits exactly where the GOP base is most angry. Some claim about lax border enforcement, allowing immigrants to come in unchecked, perhaps something about repealing the Trump rule that barred immigrants from entering during COVID (Title 42, I believe they like to rant about).

Since #2 is much more salient to the GOP electorate (and easier for Trump to campaign on that corruption) I imagine they will save that one for 2024 and do the Hunter Biden bullshit in 2023.

Remember, it’s not about removing Biden from office. The GOP certainly doesn’t want Harris in there instead, and they aren’t dumb enough to think the Senate would convict. It’s about damaging Biden/Democrats for 2024, helping Trump win, and revenge for Trump being impeached twice.

If Republicans retake the House, impeachment is guaranteed. Doesn’t matter for what, they’ll make up something. It’s all about keeping the base revved up for 2024. They know they have no chance of conviction and removal - even if the Republicans win every single Senate seat up for grabs this year and Manchin and Sinema flip, that gets them to only 66 votes.

No way in hell are the Rs taking California or New York. I’m in California and just checked the list of primary candidates. Other than the incumbent I have literally never heard of any of them.

Those particular entities deserve much worse appellations. Seditionists all.

That’s because you’re trying to find an actual action for which Biden could be impeached. The Republicans, and more importantly, their voters, won’t have any such limitation.

Take almost any of the stupid conspiracy theories we’ve heard from Qanon, and dress it up as articles of impeachment. Biden is a Pizza Place Pedophile. Biden helped Ukraine steal the election. Biden is shipping illegal aliens into small towns to take over local libraries. Biden is stealing all the guns. Biden is stealing all the Bibles. Biden Hates America. Biden is a Satanist. Biden pours the milk into his cup before the tea. Whatever, doesn’t matter, the Disaster Biden must go!

He stutters.

Off with his head!

Yes, they honestly talk about “Bidens Open border” like it’s true.

It would be a stunning development if the GOP did not win a House majority this year. As I said the Senate correlation is looser, but the in the House the president’s party loses seats in the midterm something like 90% of the time. And they only need to net 5 additional seats.

No, but it’s historically likely. The Senate is different than the House, but I don’t see the Democrats gaining two seats. We’ll see in November.

Even Ron Johnson, who is widely disliked in his home state of Wisconsin (33% approval rating, 45% unfavorable), is still likely to win re-election. I suspect that even the Republican-leaning voters who disapprove of him are likely to hold their noses at the voting booth, and vote for him over any Democrat, because of party loyalty.
