He could do it because he’s not as bad an actor as Will Smith. Or his buddy Ben could play the before (it’d be no stretch for him) and he could do the after.
Well, if the original film adaptation hadn’t been so painful to watch (Cliff Robertson’s performance was good, but the dream sequences and full-on counter-culture rebellion scene were just God-awful) I might be more upset, but I guess this might not be so bad.
Those rumours a few years ago that Smith (and Robin Williams) were going to remake Kind Hearts and Coronets… now THAT woulda been a travesty.
It’s easy to make fun of Will Smith, because of all the blockbusters he’s been in where he showed his charm more than his acting chops. But look at Six Degrees of Separation. The guy can act.
He could pull it off. The more important question is whether the screenwriter and director can pull it off.
Has Smith ever turned in a finely detailed subtle performance? I don’t ask sarcastically I’m just not an expert on this whole body of work. Most of what I’ve seen him in is big budget blow up stuff and the terrible, awful, no good “7 Pounds”. He has a huge tendency to ham it up and be overly emotive, it will be interesting to see if he can do small scale stuff.
