Republicans don’t care about crime or safety, they care about white nationalism. They are just using crime and ‘rule of law’ as an excuse to engage in white nationalist purges of non-whites and immigrants.
Will sanctuary cities hurt democrats? Probably among some voters. But a lot of voters know that the GOP war on blacks, immigrants and muslims is at root about white nationalism, and they’d be more upset if the democrats didn’t protect the victims of these GOP attempts. For a lot of democrats, if the democratic party refuses to protect victims of white nationalism, that will make a lot of democrats stay home and decide not to bother voting for the dems. If our only choices are republicans or a bunch of wimps who are scared of republicans (aka democrats), why bother voting? Most people who are upset about immigration are already republicans. Most democrats see through the bullshit and know that the GOP is at root motivated by white nationalist agendas and want the democrats to stand firm in resisting this, and protecting the victims of white nationalism.
Whatever people who have left the democratic party due to white nationalism are already gone. They aren’t coming back. At this point, the democratic party is made of people who believe in multiculturalism and resisting white nationalism.
Also conservative white men are the biggest source of pro-fascist politics and one of the biggest sources of domestic terrorism. Just throwing that out there for people who like to say ‘look what black person XYZ did’ or ‘look what immigrant XYZ did’. Well, as a class, angry conservative white men are the biggest threat to democracy we are facing.
California is not uniformly Democratic. The city mentioned in the article you linked is a tiny, white bread, upper-middle class bedroom comunity in Orange County. Not exactly a hotbed of liberal thinking.
So your conclusion does not follow from that premise.
If amnesty is going to hurt the Democrats, why didn’t it hurt Reagan, or GWB (who pushed for it but it never got passed).
I am guessing that the landslide swing in elections we see coming with liberal candidates has conservatives desperately seeking some hopeful news anywhere they can.
Of course getting all their news from the likes and Fox and Breitbart will severely skew the reality of what is going on leading them to think liberals have some big problems to overcome in the next election.
Personally I hope they keep thinking that. We can talk more about it on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 and see who is right.
Personally, I don’t think a lot of Republicans care about white nationalism. They care about getting elected. White nationalism is just something they espouse because it gets a certain group of people to vote for them. If the balance tips a little and white nationalism ends up costing Republicans more votes than it gains for them, they’ll drop it in a second.
You could almost feel sorry for all the genuine white nationalists who are going to be standing out on the street having found themselves locked out of the Republican Party headquarters where they are now welcomed. “I don’t understand. I thought you meant all those things you said. I thought we shared something special.”
Almost. Then you remember they’re white nationalists.
What I think might hurt the Democrats is the idea that opposing illegal immigration makes one a white nationalist who doesn’t value the Fourth Amendment. Much like it did in 2016.
I’m ambivalent on the subject of sanctuary cities - I’m not a big fan of playing fast and loose with the law, but then in many respects the sanctuary cities are in themselves a reaction to the federal government playing fast and loose with the law. And I suspect a lot of people will have the same issues - they may be driven away from the Democrats by the sanctuary cities, or they may be driven away from the Republicans by the utter cruelty of current deportation practices.
And in the end it will probably end up a wash based on who people were already going to vote for.
Funny thing is Obama was the best at deporting people. Yet another conservative notion like being the fiscally responsible party that bears no resemblance to reality.
Saying you don’t want immigrants, legal or illegal, from Latin America or Africa but you want immigrants from Norway certainly makes a person sound like a white nationalist.
I guess what somebody says doesn’t prove what they’re thinking. It’s possible somebody who said that isn’t a white nationalist. He might just be an idiot who’s easily swayed by the white nationalists he’s chosen to associate with.
I’ll go so far as to concede that even white nationalists are usually smart enough to hide their thoughts and not state them publicly, which does lend support to the idiot theory.
But overall, I’m not seeing much here that the Democrats need to worry about.
That’s not really a learning experience, though, just an application of your own faulty premise, which may have the unfortunate effect of helping reinforce your own faulty premise to you, whence confirmation bias.
Anyway, there’s no point being coy or immature about it, the vast majority of people who sneak into the U.S. or overstay their visits to the U.S., aren’t doing so because they want to steal something from citizens of the U.S. - they do so because there are people in the U.S. willing to hire and pay them. If you think these jobs are being “stolen” from you, grow up - the jobs weren’t yours to begin with, or if they were, why aren’t you doing them? It turns out because the people in the U.S. willing to hire and pay foreigners don’t have to pay foreigners as much, they can charge less for their goods and services. If you think those jobs were “stolen” from Americans and that Americans should be doing them, grow up and get ready to pay more. In any case, stop pretending it’s some kind of morality test - the illegal immigrants are in the U.S. because there’s a demand for them. You can only choose to be adult about it or not.
I can’t recall a thread I participated in where a left-wing editorial was presented as “news” that the right should be concerned about.
Why? Is there a case where this happened that you would like to confront me with?
