Just found out about the British one sometime in the last two months, but I still had to vote “Yes”. Doesn’t seem fair, somehow…
Decades ago, when we used to spend the summers in Ireland, I know I read Beano comics, so I MUST have seen the British Dennis the Menace… but I have no memory of him. Strange. I DO remember “The Belles of St. Lemons,” “Roger the Dodger,” “Minnie the Minx,” and “The Bash Street Kids,” but Dennis made no impression.
As a Brit, I did know about the American Dennis until I had lived in America for some time, and for a while I was confused as to whether one was somehow meant to be a “version” of the other.
The British Dennis is much more menacing. He is a thug and deliberate troublemaker. The American Dennis, so far as I can tell (I can’t say I have gone into the matter deeply), is basically well intentioned, and only causes trouble inadvertently (although he does cause a lot of it).
