Picketing a Tech funeral would be a Very Bad Idea, at least for someone who wishes to keep body and soul united. This community is suffering a pain that is unimaginable. We are also fiercely and ferociously protective of those who have already suffered. There are many here grieved and traumatized beyond the point of being able to tolerate any more evil or unable to allow more pain to be visited on this town. Someone is going to snap, then the mob joins in. And what jury would convict them?
You cause shit at one of these funerals and you will earn your own pine box. That is not a threat or a wish, just my observation of the circumstances. I personally would not get involved, but many many more would.

Tritto. It’s a copycat of when Fox gave him airtime not to picket the Amish funerals but I see it now as the same as rewarding a two year old’s tantrum. For the sake of the Clark family I’m very glad he won’t be there, but for selfish reasons I am disappointed. The Phelps clan simply is not going to participate in rational debate or even pretend to, and they’ve reacted with great pride to being called every kind of freak and flipped off and mooned and everything else that’s rude but non-harmful, so logic and decency and even screaming are only fueling them. Not wishing anybody harm of course, but, strictly hypothetically, I honestly think that a really great discourse like the one Sonny Corleone had on with his brother-in-law Carlo Rizzi on the social problem of domestic abuse and why one shouldn’t would be the one unemployed action that may actually get through to them, and while the Corleones were NYC based I think that working class Atlanta might be a really likely place to see said discourse reenacted.
What I really wish would happen, and it’s totally non-violent, is that somebody like David Geffen or (Rolling Stone & other major media outlets owner) Jann Wenner or some other gay guy with Oprah-money would put aside just a few million dollars into a “Phuck the Phelps” trust fund. The interest would be used to pay for the defense of anybody sued by the Phelps for almost any reason or to pay the legal bills of anybody who filed a legitimate suit against the Phelps clan. Currently if Phred & Phamily decide to file a suit against the City of Topeka for some asinine charge the city’s insurers will give them $5000 or so in “go away” money because it’s a lot cheaper than the expense of fighting the suit; a Phuck Phred Phund would basically say “Nope, take it to court. What’ll it take to fight it? $35,000? Here you go… need more, let us know.” Phred and Phamily called you at home to make fun of your dead soldier but you can’t afford to take him to court for harassment because they have no bank accounts? Here you go- there’s $40,000 for legal bills- get a judgment and trust me, we’ll find someway of enforcing it. Meanwhile hire private investigators full-time to look into the death of Debbie Valgos (the fiancee of a Phelps son who the rest of the family hated, who officially committed suicide but foul-play has always been suspected) and find if there’s ANY reason to reopen the case.
After a year or two of no easy settlements the Westboro Baptist Church’s income is affected. Because the suits aren’t settled the family has to actually devote resources and hours to fighting the case, which means they can’t concentrate on other litigation or paying customers, so their finances are further affected. If the suits are frivolous enough then yet more members of the Phamily (like Phred and at least two of his kids already) can be disbarred, hurting them even more.
Meanwhile, have investigators pouring over every single public record there is. If there’s an ordinance from 1884 stating it’s illegal to drive a car on that street without wearing a duster and goggles, cite 'em. If there’s anything remotely illegal going on (even if it’s simply a matter of districting or licensing), start as much shit as legally possible about it. Find out to the best degree of your ability to finding out if their “church” and compound (the family lives communally in a series of houses with conjoined yards and a sanctuary in the middle) in any way is disallowable for taxes or otherways in violation of church privileges and harass phuck out of them there. Find any case of fraudulent conveyance of assets in the financial maneuvering they’ve done to avoid paying the many judgments against them and make them pay up.
Currently they’re able to do their picketing and the like because they have the financial liberty to do so. The best way to destroy an enemy is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS to destroy their supply line- do that and they have no choice but to surrender when they’re starved out. Take away their lucrative lawsuits, their law degrees, the fact people are afraid to confront them because they sue everybody in sight but can’t be sued because their assets are shielded, and you’ll soon stop the Phelpses. They’ll all have to get day jobs to support the 823 kids they all have and won’t be able to do this shit.
Serial killers are apparently wimps. O.J. and the Westboro Baptist Church probably have nothing to fear, as long as the psychos continue going after the easy kills.

It would be nice for some proper Christians to picket the Phelps’ picket lines, holding placards saying ‘God Forgives Bigots’ and such. Not that it would achieve much, but would at least make a point.
Considering they were celebrating the death of Mr. Rogers (yes, of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood on PBS) I don’t think they consider anyone good. The entire human race is evil because we don’t hunt down and lynch the homosexuals.

In other words… Ignore them, don’t give them the satisfaction of being angry at them. Clearly they are totally immune to reason and they feed off others’ hatred. The best way to contain them is to show them that they are insignificant, meaningless, just an amusing joke of a family - nothing more.
But, surely they consider themselves good, so when one of their own dies tragically, their whole theory of God as righteous social punisher falls apart?
