Will Tunisian revolution inspire actions in other nations? (Now following Egypt.) [ed. title]

Operation “Libya White Fax”

Would you believe, Tunisia again?

Yea things will be a lot more stable then…I’m not aeeing this as a good thing. Ymmv.

Seems understandable. It’s as if Bush had been forced to resign and replaced by Cheney.

Awwww, the world’s gonna end as soon as America gets overrun by all the brown people. Boo hoo.

Dafy Gaddafi’s blowing a gut on TV right now. BBC is showing it live. He is rambling and rambling. The bottom line seems to be he is the law in Libya and will kill all opponents. He’s sure taking a long time to say it.

For countries like Iran and Algeria where street protests are being cracked down hard, how would those countries fare if a general strike was called? What that be enough to bring down these regimes if was widespread enough? I am certain the leaders have pretty good stockpiles, but enough for all their supporters if the whole country shut down?

Has a general strike ever brought down a government? because if I was in Tehran or Algiers, I would be secretly stockpiling rice, beans, water and cooking fuel, then just sit at home - while making sure enough people are doing the same - so the question is how many would be enough? I doubt those countries would be able to force everyone back to work.

Any historical examples?

The Egyptian revolution included a general strike.

It seems there are 23,000 Thais living in Libya. There’s a plan to evacuate 10,000 of them immediately, but I’m not sure exactly how that’s going to work. Usually with these sorts of plans from the Thai government, wishful thinking plays a large part.

Daffy Gadhafi’s latest screed was just as entertaining as the others. A 20-minute phone call from unknown parts. He actually compared himself with Queen Elizabeth. Said there are rulers who have been in power much longer than he has, such as Queen Elizabeth, and nothing’s happened to her. Also claimed al-Qaeda is behind the Libyan uprising. Warned parents that Osama bin Laden is giving alcohol and drugs to their children to make them revolt.

Egyptians Get View of Extent of Spying

Excerpt: “There are lists of informants from inside the Muslim Brotherhood and the names of judges who helped rig local elections. Even for young activists who knew they were being monitored, the level of detail has been sobering: one found a picture of herself at a party; another discovered transcripts of text messages exchanged with her husband; a third leafed through a biography of his famous grandfather, a former Brotherhood leader.”

Starting to look like you might get your wish.

I said “might,” mind you. Assad is really strong and, still, apparently really popular. But, the protests won’t stop, and several protesters were killed today.
