It was a really good look, but I never hear anything about them bringing the shorts back. Is there any possibility of them bring back the shorts they wore in the '70’s? Maybe for a throwback day?
Good god man, you’re serious?
Those things were hideous.
And the players hated 'em.
*Who wears short shorts? We wear short shorts… *
Always wondered…how the hell did they slide into second in those things?
Gotta love Veeck, though…good or bad, he always had the stones to try something new!
I remember seeing Terry Forster and Greg Luzinski in shorts.
So the only possible answer is: God, I hope not!
While you are at it, see if you can get some football teams to wear throwback leather helmets.
Don’t tell me the White Sox are even thinking about going commando.
Are you sure you saw Luzinski in the shorts? I thought they only used the shorts in '76. Did they come out again in the 80s?
As bad as the shorts were, what was up with those “half collars” on the shirts? They kinda sat on the shoulder but didn’t go all the way around to the back of the neck.
I guess the hope was that the opposing teams would be laughing so hard at the uniforms that the Sox would actually win a few games.
I could have sworn it was Luzinski, but you’re right, it couldn’t have been.
The memory is going on me.
I was poking around, looking for an image of said unis.

Some say they have a throwback from “1976-1983,” which doesn’t seem right to me. Late seventies, you had Soderholm et al wearing those black uniforms. 1983 was the year we made the playoffs and they were definitely red-white-blue. Maybe 1976-1982?
Born in Chicago, Illinois, he attended Notre Dame High School in Niles, Illinois. Luzinski spent the majority of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies (1970–1980), and retired as a member of the Chicago White Sox (1981–1984).
Choke much in the playoffs, Bull? Remember in 84 when he hit grand slams in back to back games? IIRC the TV flashed a hilarious caption as he rounded the bases: “First grand slam since yesterday.”
Ahem, if he did wear the toady uniform, I guess it would have to have been 1981 or 1982, barring a throwback. But who would have wanted to see it when it hadn’t been retired all that long and they were still in the bliss of having new uniforms?
ETA: Possibly he returned for an old-timers game and, still pissed about his poor performance in the ACLS, they punished him by forcing him to wear that uniform?
Actually, that’s ironic in that at the time those would have been considered quite long shorts. Almost to the knee! Back then, your average gym shorts were barely longer than a pair of briefs! I can’t imagine anyone would have been able to wear boxers with them.
The White Sox wore the softball-style uniforms from 1976 through 1981. Luzinski wore them for his first year, 1981. They wore the shorts only once, for the first game of a double-header on August 8, 1976. Terry Forster was indeed the starting pitcher that day, but Luzinski was five years in the future.
