Will you watch the Steve Irwin death video?

FormerMarineGuy, do you have a cite for this? What little I’ve read suggests no such thing. Why do you think she’d want it released?

I was listening to Howard Stern and their of the opinion that Terri’s wife will release it because it’s what Irwin would have wanted.

I agree.

And Inigo Montoya; I am now subscribing to your newsletter!!

I wouldn’t watch it, even if the family releases it and it’s completely clear that he would be completely cool with its release. I don’t watch ‘death videos.’

My son, on the other hand, definately would watch it, whoever releases it. And my husband would watch it if the family released it.

We talked about this just last night, as you can see.

And yet, here you are …
:dubious:

What would they know?

Terry Stainton, Irwin’s manager and friend, said says that the footage should never be seen.

Yet, it is up on Uselessjunk.com as we speak.

Hardy har.

I don’t want to see him die, but I do have quite a bit of morbid curiosity of how it happened. I’m having a hard time envisioning it (not that I should be able to or even want to, it’s just reaction to hearing the news to try to mentally construct what happened). I will probably watch it and turn my head away or cover my eyes when he actually gets stabbed, as I do in all violent movies. I see enough to know what happened, but not enough to burn it into my brain. However, I will certainly not seek out the video.

No way. I liked the guy…

I don’t understand the whole “lived long enough to pull out the barb” thing.
Stingrays are not bees or porcupines, their weapons are not one-time use and don’t become embedded in a victim and carried off. To get a stingray barb you cut it off of the stingray, it doesn’t just pull out–they are smooth but have a sharp tip, and look a bit like a dark toothpick or urchin spine.

As someone who has gone snorkeling in the shallows, caught a wave and nearly been deposited onto a stingray–I never EVER want to see a stingray three inches from my facemask straight underneath again–I can see how this could happen and the news of his death and the manner of death really bothers me.

Utterly different situations. Steve Irwin’s death is REAL, you see. His wife is an actual widow; his children are actual orphans. And disseminating a recording of his death is a horrible invasion of their privacy.

According to a marine biologist on the BBC news, and halfway down this page, they do indeed have barbs.

They have a serrated edge, that they move back and forth…

  • Stop hitting me! *

At the risk of provoking a debate, how the hell is it an invasion of their privacy? Somebody better tell the Kennedy’s this…

Try putting yourself in their shoes. Imagine a loved one’s death were inadvertently videotaped. Would you rather that video be given to you for disposition,or that thousands of persons watch it for amusement? Doesn’t the latter prospect disturb you as surely as if you television cameramen sought to enter a hospital room where that loved one lay dying?

I understand what you’re saying, but, Teri may want to use it to dispel the rumors going around that Steve was provoking the stingray. If she’s aware of them and they bother her. Otherwise, what you said.

I keep hearing people speculate that Mrs. Irwin may release the video. Has there been any indication of this being so? Has anyone a cite to that effect?

I don’t see a barb, I see a serrated edge. Admittedly, one which was not discerned in my memory of viewing my dad’s box of stingray stingers trophies, but still, I have yet to meet a stingray victim with a stinger still in them. They would almost look like someone stabbed with a little piece of glass or radomn metal on the seabed if we didn’t have their account of the feeling of the incident.

It really wouldn’t seem to be my business. Just because you love someone doesn’t mean you own them and all likenesses of them into perpetuity. Which brings me to a legal question - who actually owns the footage? If she has a controlling interest in the business and it’s actually hers, then it’s hers. But if his contract says it belongs to his manager or whomever, then it’s theirs and I don’t see how the family has anything to do with it.

[Nitpick]
How can his children be actual orphans? The definition of orphan means that a child has lost both parents, not one.
