Just “upgraded” to Win 2k Pro. When I try to burn a CD using my Mirai CRD-BP1500P-M writer it repeatly suffers buffer underuns and has to use its burn proof software to stave of disaster.
The same drive and software (Nero 5.5.6.0 oem) worked perfectly under 98SE.
Running the speed test shows that the hard drive can do 40* + constantly without any problems but as soon as it goes to a simulation or an attempt to burn the buffer empties again and again.
Any suggestion before I smack it with the format stick and go back to SE?
No specific Win2k updates for either. Formatted and gone back to 98SE and it works like a charm so it’s not coincidental hardware failure. When I ran the pre instalation check in 2k it didn’t report any problems with the writer, but evidently…
Just what you get for buying the cheapest hardware in the shop I guess.
Ah well, I can live with 98 a while longer, at least it’ll be stable again, for a while at least.
It may not be a Win2k-specific update that you need. I had all kinds of trouble with my CD-RW under Windows 2000, until I upgraded my chipset drivers (VIA “3 in 1”).
Sounds like it’s too late, but keep that in mind if you decide to try Win2k again.
Have a VIA mobo chipset myself. Was going to write the whole idea off but I’ve taken a fancy to a dual boot Windows/Mandrake Linux system and suspect I’ll have to zap my spanky new instalation of 98 to partition the hard drive.
Might give it another go after all, thanks for the advice.
