Window AC units...is this possible?

I have a window AC unit and it is time to set it up in my new apartment. However, the only windows that are sized and set up for an AC unit are over a pit of rotting wood and such. I went to clean it out today so I could install the AC and my shovel just plowed through a big pile of boards that have obviously been there for years. Cleaning this out without hiring professionals is obviously not an option and my super appears to have died or something because no one can get a hold of him so that stuff appears to be staying exactly where it is, but I still need an AC so as to avoid dying of heatstroke in my apartment this summer.

These windows open from the top and the bottom and if I can figure out how to install the AC in the top section of the windows I should be able to use it while we track down the super to clean out that space. I am very afraid that if we set the AC up in that top section though that it will not be properly supported and will rip our window out of the wall. Is there any way to install a unit in the top section of our window without damaging the glass or the wall?

You only need something to bear the load from the bottom. The bottom sill/frame do the load carrying in normal setups. It is possible a very strong window could do it.

You could nail a framing member, 2x4 or better, across the window frame horizontally.

So much depends on the window and framing.

Most wood-framed double-hung (top/bottom open and close) windows could probably do the job alone.
