Window frames replacement cost?

We are painting the good old house, and I realize that most window frames will just eventually need to be replaced.

The windows are new, the window frames are rotting away.
Do any of you guys have an idea of the cost of replacing the whole window frame? I guess the window will have to be removed, the wood “planks” torn out and new wood put in place.
They are regular window frames, nothing fancy.
Any suggestions?

I would figure about $50-$100 per window, installed, if someone you know is rebuilding them for you. You need to get this done if there is rot present, regardless of cost. If not, you will eventually have water intrusion and further damage to studs, underlayment, etc.

If you just want to replace the entire window with a PVC framed thermal window, you can pick the entire thing up at Home Depot for about $100-$125 each. Installation will cost you another like amount (or more) by a contractor. To avoid contractor markup on the windows, have him measure the openings for you, then go order them yourself. PVC frames will last virtually forever.

Thanks Chef, that’s very good advice. I will consider PVC.
You are right, it needs to be done, and I actually thought it would be a little more expensive, so that’s good news.
Winter is coming way to fast, and because of finances as well, it will have to wait for next spring…
Thanks again!

Well, the cost I’m quoting was from a guy who rebuilt some of my old window frames and he gave me a good price. A contractor is going to probably double up on that. If you put in the PVC thermos, you may be able to get an energy improvement loan from your bank. Stay away from the cheap crap out there, if possible.
