I have an old laptop that is running Windows 10. It has a 32G SSD, and for years it keeps occasionally telling me that I need to clear space on the drive. Except that I can’t find anything to delete. This gets particularly annoying when it wants me to update, but then claims there isn’t enough space to run the upgrade.
It also keeps trying to get me to upgrade to W11, but that this would require a hardware upgrade which is impossible to do.
I’ve never cared a whit whether Microsoft “supports” something or not, as long as it works. I might even still be using Windows XP except for (a) expired root security certificates, (b) applications requiring newer versions of NET Framework than will work on XP, and (c) memory address space limitations, which is problematic because newer apps are so incredibly bloated.
This was an astonishing act of hubris on MS’s part. I love having the taskbar at the top. Most of my mouse movements are near the top so having to mouse down to the bottom is a pain.
I also don’t do TPM and since MS seems hell bent on blocking workarounds for upgraders who want to avoid all that forget 'em.
There are a couple of add-ons that allow one to place the taskbar on top (or either side), and at least one gives the option of reverting to the Win10 style taskbar. However, I’ve read that as of the 24H2 update they won’t work, allegedly because MS is stripping the Win10 code out of the OS.
I’m a little surprised by all the Win 11 hate here. I find Windows 11 to be boringly stable and relatively unobtrusive. Having said that, I am running third-party software (Shell Menu) to give me the Start menu and Explorer window settings I prefer.
I also use ImageGlass rather than the built-in photo viewer because I have run into an error (on all versions of Windows) where the default viewer says it is out of memory when I am trying to open a picture that is under 1mb in size. I have 32GB of RAM, I never want to hear about memory errors when trying to view pictures. In any case, it is one of those poorly-documented errors that millions of Microsoft “helpers” will tell you to fix by clearing your cookies and other nonsense when the actual problem seems to be something to do with user permissions on color profiles. But like I said, this is a problem that transcends versions of Windows and will never be fixed.
Other than that, it annoys me that if I put an App icon on the desktop, Windows will forget the icon and there is no easy way to restore it. You’d think this would be really simple but Apps are special and they don’t allow you to just pick an icon like shortcuts do. Oh well, I just leave Spotify running all the time since I’m apparently not allowed to remove the App and replace it with the program instead. First world problem.
