Windows is offering me early access to Windows 11, version 26H2. I’m not seeing anything I want, and I do see more AI. Any big security/performance reasons to allow the update? Thanks.
Security, yes, it’s a good idea to update your OS, whether Windows, Mac, or Linux. Windows is getting tricky about if this is “allowed” by your hardware recently, and Mac has for some time.
Performance, YMMV, I haven’t read the patch notes. But my bet and FQ removal of opinion says probably not. Update to 26H2 when you can, but maybe before bed not immediately.
Windows 11, version 26H2 is a feature update, not a security or quality update. So I doubt it will offer any security or performance improvement.
Good point, I was thinking (eventually) it will be pushed first to get quality updates, but H1/H2 updates don’t necessarily have urgency so I like this answer.
This is the important page to look at. To remain secure, you must upgrade before whichever version of Windows 11 you are using expires. If you are on 24H2 or earlier, then upgrade. If you’re on 25H2, then you have a year to think about it.
| Version | Start Date | End Date |
|---|---|---|
| Version 26H2 | Sep 29, 2026 | Oct 10, 2028 |
| Version 26H1 | Feb 10, 2026 | Mar 15, 2028 |
| Version 25H2 | Sep 30, 2025 | Oct 13, 2027 |
| Version 24H2 | Oct 1, 2024 | Oct 14, 2026 |
The one thing I liked was additional customizability, because I like being able to make my environment look however I want to (without installing a 3rd party work-around that will eventually break after a future update), and one thing that bugs me about 11 is how restrictive the UI can be compared to older versions.
Here is some info about the added customization:
It addresses a few of my pet peeves with 11, so I went ahead with the update. It was fast and didn’t break anything at least.
I upgraded my desktop yesterday. I will use it for a month or so before I start pushing it to my employees via a managed upgrade.
As noted, this is a feature pack and 25H2 will continue to get security patches.
26H1 is a bit of an anomaly, it’s targeted at newer ARM processors and not intended for Intel/AMD x64 boxes. 25H2 is the common down-rev version and will be supported for another year.
My computer keeps failing on the update. Apparently this is most likely some sort of driver conflict. I’ve done the bare minimum, I’m not about to start unpluging all my stuff and deleting those pesky printers, uninstalling programs, etc. that took forever to get installed - especially if that doesn’t fix the problem.
I would think an update could tell me which driver is not compatible…
Unless the upgrade itself is the malware that you’re trying to stay secure against.
