Windows 7 laptop sleep settings

Okay, another question from my Mac-using self about managing my Windows 7 laptop.

How in holy hell do I set this thing up to never go to sleep? This is something that is a piece of cake on my Mac, but I sure as hell can’t find how to do it on a Windows machine.

Part of my problem may be that it’s a laptop, and laptops like to sleep as often as possible in order to save battery life. But, in my case, I didn’t buy this laptop to have a portable computer. I bought it because I wanted a Windows machine on my desk without taking up a lot of space. So it is constantly plugged into AC power, and battery life isn’t an issue.

I installed SETI on this laptop, and SETI only runs when the screensaver activates and I’m not using the laptop for anything else. But SETI isn’t going to accomplish much if the whole computer is shutting itself down and logging me out after 10 minutes of inactivity.

Press the windows key and type “power options” into the search line at the bottom and run it. Click on “change plan settings” for your current plan, and select the options you desire.

Go to Control Panel -> Power Options. I believe that by default Windows 7 uses the ‘Balanced’ power profile, which puts the computer to sleep after 15 minutes on battery, and after 30 minutes on AC power. Click on ‘Change Plan Settings’ for whatever plan is active and you can change the timings, including disabling Sleep altogether.

Thank you
