I just recently installed Windows 7, and I’m using Firefox.
The problem I’m having is that every web page I view looks all stripped-down – most of the buttons are missing, though if I mouse over the words for what the button does will appear. Sometimes even search fields won’t show up. And a lot of the page elements are missing, padding, borders, etc.
I have updated flash player, direct x, firefox itself, my video card drivers, and whatever else I can think of, but it hasn’t helped.
It sounds like either JavaScript isn’t enabled (and the site relies on it, as many sites do now), or your browser isn’t loading CSS.
Unless you’re having network connection problems in other applications, I doubt Windows 7 is the cause. (If you are having connection problems, though, that could also explain what you’re seeing-- the CSS doesn’t get rendered because the network connection to retrieve it failed.)
It’s also possible you happened to load the website when their server was having problems, and simply visiting tomorrow will fix it.
In the top right corner, below the banner ads but just above the game itself, is a row of buttons I know are there, but they are completely invisible to me. They say “Lights”, “Launch Popup”, “Stretch Game,” etc.
If I mouseover that area, the button captions appear one by one. (and they are functional.) But I see nothing otherwise.
I am having no connection problems, and javascript is enabled in the browser. I just downloaded the newest Java RE.
However, it didn’t occur to me that it might not be cumulative – do I need to uninstall the one I have and start from earlier versions?
Oh Newgrounds! Almost certainly their server’s broken. This is why we need to know what site you’re talking about, haha! Newgrounds is always broken.
Try holding Control while you hit F5 to refresh and see if that fixes it.
I’d actually highly, highly recommend removing Java entirely unless there’s some particular site or program you use that requires it and you can’t live without.
Wow, Blakeyrat, that was fast! I tried the control-F5 thing (ooh, fancy, and here all this time I’ve been using the “reload” button in my browser or the context menu lol) but nothing changed.
I feel ya about newgrounds, but I assure you, it’s not just this page.
And I know you’re right about the java; but for interest’s sake, could it be that the latest runtime environment I downloaded is not a standalone, or was the wrong one for my purposes?
Note the skeletal look of everything, and the notable absence of colored fills and stuff.
Let me know if it isn’t apparent what I mean.
P.S. CHROME?! Afraid it’s against my religion. I will commit a lesser sin and try IE, in the interest of science. I’ll let you know.
No, I mean I had already uninstalled it, when I went looking for it. You are absolutely right that it is critical to know if it happens with other browsers. I’ll install another one & let you know.
Did you transfer your Firefox “profile” from the previous version of Firefox in your old version of Windows? If so, try a clean install of Firefox without transferring the profile and try visiting numerous sites to see if it performs any differently.
The Firefox profile contains all your bookmarks, which is the primary reason most people copy it to a new version. But it also includes your add-ons, plugins, customized settings and any personalization from the old version of Firefox.
It’s worth a shot…and you can extract just your bookmarks from the profile if necessary.
I was able to recreate your issue identically by disabling all “background” CSS in the page. Do you have an ad blocker? If so, disable it and try again. It could be blocking the background images that are referenced in the CSS.
Ok now that I’ve seen images, I’m back to thinking it’s a CSS problem. Your computer is either not retrieving, or not rendering, the CSS files.
Do you have an ad blocker installed? Try removing it temporarily to see if the problem clears up.
BTW: the difference between F5 and control-F5 is that control-F5 tells the browser to ignore everything in your computer’s cache and reload the entire site from the server again. This works because sometimes your computer will cache out-dated or incomplete files (especially JavaScript files) when the rest of the site is expecting to have the newest version. Using control-F5 ensures your computer is using all the files expects it to be using.
In CONTROL PANEL, click on Programs and Features
In the Window that opens, click on Turn Windows Features On or Off to the left side
You should see Internet Explorer 8 with a check box among the choices available
Check the box to reinstall IE8
Or, if you just want to download an alternate browser for testing purposes, I suggest Opera (and it’s not Chrome)!
