Argh. I hate to post these types of questions, because I am pretty PC literate…however…
Pop up windows: When they can’t be controlled, how do I stop them from opening so that the ‘close window icon’ - the ‘x’ - isn’t off screen? Working with Exp 5.5 and Win2000, my pop up windows always pop-up partly off screen. Sometimes, desired links that open in new windows pop-up partly off screen. How do I default them to open on-screen?
Is there reliable software that can manage pop-up windows?
Sorry, I searched bit, but wasn’t as succesful as I hoped.
I honestly don’t know that there’s any solution for that, Philster. I wouldn’t rule out the possiblity that those annoyances are specifically programmed to come up in such a way that they are harder to close.
Here’s a coping mechanism, though. You don’t have to click on the “X” in the top right corner to close the window. You can also double-click on the control icon in the top left corner of the window. You can also usually right-click on the button in the Start bar at the bottom of the window and chose “Close.”
I have heard that some people alter their hosts/lmhosts files so that whenever an ad for a specific piece of merchandise comes up (say the little camera) the local machine treats it as a local site and therefore loads nothing in the windows. I have not tried this myself as apparantly this can cause some other things to go wrong with the system somehow.
since w95 I have known if you hit alt+spacebar, you get an option to close a window off screen or not. you might further check you windows docs but this should do it.
A little tip. Pressing alt+F4 will close the currently active open window, whether you can see it or its titlebar or not. Very usefull for quickly closing ahem “unfortunate” popups.
