Windows Live Mail puzzler

I have two computers, a laptop and a notebook, both connected through a router. The laptop has Windows Outlook and is our prime software for downloading, reading and sending of emails. The notebook has Windows Live Mail, which, although I set it up properly, has never actually been able to connect with our email server.

Since we’re going on a trip and will be taking the notebook with us, I thought I’d check today to see if I’d made any errors in the setup. Suddenly, four new emails appeared, and I thought. . .WTF? Then I went to the laptop and opened Outlook, and it downloaded the same four emails from the server. How is that possible? Shouldn’t they have disappeared off the server after the first download?

Now when I click on Windows Live Mail, I get a dialog window that says “Checking for new messages on (server)”, then below that is says “Not connected.” In other words, the program doesn’t actually open so that (in theory) I could see any emails already downloaded or copies of sent mail. What am I missing here? Why is it not connected, when clearly the computer is talking to the router, and why doesn’t the full program open?

It is possible to configure both Outlook and Microsoft Live Mail to leave a copy of the message on the server. I believe that the option can be set for an individual account.

As for your connection issues, I’ve got nothing, but I would say, if the laptop downloaded the messages once, the issues are at least intermittent.

Hmmm…I’m thinking perhaps Windows Live Mail may have a default setting for what you’re saying. I still can’t figure out why I don’t get Live to load when I click on it, and only get that window.
