Windows XP volume control problem

I scarcely know how to describe the problem but I’ll make a go of it. I have been having a bit of problem with the volume on my desktop computer lately (Windows XP SP2). Various programs (games, movies, etc.) will increase the volume. When playing movies, it is in response to my selecting a higher volume; games, I think, just increase the volume themselves.

The problem is that they set a slider called ‘wave’ higher while leaving the volume control slider the same (double click the speaker icon and you’ll see what I mean). Because the volume control slider is not changed, I can’t just decrease the volume with my keyboard switch; I must double click on the icon and adjust the ‘wave’ slider. I don’t know what ‘wave’ is anyway.

Is there anyway to force the system to just use the ‘volume control’ slider and not the other 5 or 10 sliders?

Like I said, I don’t have any idea of what ‘wave’ means, or why it is being changed instead of the volume control slider.

If there isn’t any way to fix this, can you recommend a volume control app which is simpler.

All I want is a simple slider to adjust volume, afterall.
