The point is that the punishment needs to fit the crime. Punishment is a deterrant right up to the point where it becomes draconic. That’s when it achieves the opposite. At the prospect of facing a life in prison or even death, it becomes understandable - although still inexcusable, I still did not say that it is ok to do so - why people are panicing and trying to cover things up.
