Windstorm in DC/VA

I’m at work since I have no power at home. One employee couldn’t get in because of a tree falling on her street and the other had to leave early because of a tree falling on her porch and only 2 patients showed up. There is no point in going home where there is no power and therefore nothing to do especially since I am without a cellphone until at least tomorrow. So I might as well hang out here where I have power and internet.

Surprised there’s such a difference between US Capitol and Union Station, since they’re only a few blocks apart. There’s a wind tunnel, I suppose.

Power is still on here for now, but has flickered ominously a number of times, so if it goes out, I won’t be surprised. The wind gusts sound like a 747 flying overhead. I work for the county school system and unsurprisingly, they closed for the day, which was 100% the right call. Kids would definitely have gotten hurt.

Power at home went out for about 15 seconds, according to my husband. I passed a lot of downed branches and one big-ass tree that had fallen, tearing up its roots - luckily, it fell parallel to the house rather than across it.

I looked on this site and zoomed in on the Chesapeake Bay - you can see the ships waiting at the Bay Bridge and the Bay Bridge Tunnel - I think I counted 32 in total, and that doesn’t include the ones in port in Baltimore and Norfolk. Once the channel is reopened, the pilots are gonna be busy!!

I’m feeling like the wind has died down significantly in the last hour. They were saying it would calm down some once the sun started going down, but I feel like I haven’t heard the 747 sound in quite some time, now.

I’ve probably just jinxed it.

Wind woke me up at 3:15 a.m.

The carrier actually delivered my newspapers this morning. I brought them in and had just closed the front door when I heard something go “WHAP!” outside. Turns out a piece of siding came off our house (fortunately, in a fairly inconspicuous place) and landed under my husband’s car. I put the piece in the garage and called the handyman immediately. They were a couple of hours getting back to me but I have an appointment to get it fixed next Wednesday.

We still have power. My sister’s house lost it for a couple of hours, but now it’s back. (She’s in Massachusetts.)

From what I can tell looking at some weather maps (which isn’t much), there’s a huge low pressure system centered over the ocean just about due east of DC that seems to be responsible for this. It’s fairly windy here in southern Ontario, too, but much weaker, and seems to be the very edge of the same system.

It’s still very windy/noisy here (in the Falls Church/McLean/Vienna triangle). For most of the day I was able to appreciate the grandeur of the mighty and majestic whatever, but I am now officially OVER this wind.

We had 30 mph winds with 40 mph gusts. Despite this, it’s considered OK to send children out for recess, because this is normal here. I feel for you, but I am also envious. There has been no measurable precipitation here for more than 130 days.

The storm system underwent “bombogenesis” over Thursday night and into Friday daytime, meaning this is another “Bomb Cyclone” that had the bottom drop out on the central low so it provokes unusually intense wind. NoVa/DC was, erm, shall we say, exciting… but where you really do ***not ***want to be is the coast to the northeast, due to storm surge. THAT really racks up the damages and casualties.

Word. I have had it with these MFing cyclones on this MFing Atlantic.

Still blowing like crazy here. I can’t believe how loud it is!

Still no power at my house. I’m giving up and going home to feed the cats. They are probably totally freaked out by now. Guess I’ll check back in if I ever get power back. (Still not even an estimate of when it will be fixed).

So far so good with my power. I am very grateful.

Ha! Mostly I’d just like to be able to sleep for more than 2-3 hours at a time. I tried napping in the late afternoon, when last night’s lack of sleep caught up with me, but the wind woke me up in less than two hours. I’m about to turn in for the night: even though we’re still under a watch for another 7 hours (or so), I’m hoping the gusts will start to abate at least a little.

Right?! I actually find myself a little jealous of friends who live in condos/apartments. My house is one level, so I can’t even go downstairs to try to escape the noise of branches, etc., on the roof. There are times when the wind is simply roaring around the house.

Good luck, psychobunny!!

Last night I was standing in the back yard with the dogs, waiting on them to do what they needed to do, and I suddenly thought “Gee, I wonder how long it would take my husband to come looking for me if a branch ripped off and hit me?” It spooked me a little and I rounded up critters and went inside.

This morning I saw that a massive tree branch had hit right where I had been standing.

Power went out about 1:30; neighbor said the 'electric co’s estimate is 5pm…Sunday!

I had to go to the store, a mile away. The snow ( which wasn’t in our forecast) was blowing horizontally. I walked & got there faster than the cars.

You know the Waffle House Index? We have a new one; the Wawa weather index - 3 Wawa’s in a row were closed due to lack of power.

The roads were fine in NJ, but the wind gusts were insane, especially since it was dark out, meaning one couldn’t see moving branches due to the dark.

As I was standing out on the front porch, the wind scooted a chair several feet in a very Ghostbusters-like fashion. It wasn’t being tossed around and bouncing all over the place like you’d expect. It was as though a spirit just wanted to rest its ectoplasmic legs for a second and have a little chat with me or something.

Wind still blowing this morning, but it’s not loud - last night, it was insane! Along with the various sticks on the deck, 2 of the cushions from the furniture had been blown off - not a big deal, but it took me a few seconds to figure out what that dark thing was on the deck when I let the dog out.

The sun is shining, and we didn’t lose power last night. I’m guessing the worst is over for us now. And I’m guessing I’ll be gathering sticks this afternoon. Good times…

Just stepped outside for the first time since yesterday afternoon. It’s breezy and cold here in northern Calvert County, but we didn’t lose power, no trees fell near our yard, and as FCM said, the sun is shining. The Firebug and I will be picking up fallen branches later today and heaving them into the woods.

Anyone in the way of this stuff, please be safe.

I was at home yesterday morning because the gov’t offices was closed, but intended to try and do some work via my laptop. Then the power went out around 8 am. It didn’t come back until sometime last night–I heard the furnace go on. The temperature was down into the 50s inside the house by the time I went to bed (around 6, since there was no point to sitting up in the cold and dark).

Everything seems to be okay this morning.

You could hear the next blast of wind coming up toward the house from some distance. It disturbed the cats, and the pine tree branches scraping outside the house and loose debris batting on the windows really frightened them.
