Windstorm in DC/VA

My mom lives in Harford county and they’ve been without power for close to 24 hours. They were supposed to leave on a cruise today, but the channel into the Bay is still closed as far as I can tell. Mom and sister are talking about canceling the cruise. They’re not happy…

I’m amazed that the ship did get back to the cruise terminal - wonder how they managed that? Anyway, Mom and Sis are still thinking about not going. Like staying home will make the power come on any faster… Sheesh, I’d be gone in a heartbeat!

A motorcycle holding up a tree? Wow.

As of now the tree is still standing. A humongous tree fell a block away. It probably knocked power out for a few folks, but at least it didn’t hit any buildings.

I’m glad everyone is OK today!

**raventhief **and Snooooopy:

FairyChatMom, I hope your mom and sis don’t cancel their cruise!

I was able to sleep through the night (yay!), and woke to nothing worse than a few branches/sticks around the house. I never lost power, which frankly amazes me given the overhead lines here and how many trees are around. Several local friends have been without power for 24 hours or more.

It’s still quite breezy today, but nothing like yesterday: today’s gusts are on the low end of yesterday’s sustained winds. Luckily I have nowhere to be until tomorrow, so I can enjoy another lazy day with my dog.

Okay here too. Despite 24 hours, almost to the minute, without power. Ugh. :frowning:

On the bright side, we lit a fire, were able to make a hot dinner (gas stove), chatted and enjoyed cocktails, and I READ almost an entire book. I’d forgotten the pleasure of being so engrossed in a good book without interruptions of modern living.

Power out from about 1PM yesterday to just after noon today- longest outage since the derecho a few years back (we’re usually very lucky). Most of the neighborhood is still out. Tons of trees and power lines down; we didn’t lose any trees, but one pair looks pretty sketchy at the moment so we might bring someone in to take them down before they go on their own. Lots of debris throughout the yard, a lot of which apparently impacted our kitchen windows throughout the day yesterday because I had to keep getting up and re-setting our window alarms. Ordered in pizza last night from one of the few places in the area that had power.

House is currently 57 and slowly coming up in temperature, and thankfully the fish made it through the experience despite a lack of heat and circulating water.

Power came back this AM and I have heat. More importantly, I have a new mobile phone and thanks to iCloud I got back most of my data. Still trying to remember passwords for some apps and trying to get the DVR hooked back into the phone but overall things are better. Hope everyone else gets power back soon.

My Kindle was fully charged. Between that, the shows/movies I’d downloaded to my iPad, and the coloring books I have in the house — oh, and my portable chargers — it would have been quite a while before I needed to resort to reading an actual book.

I only read the book because I didn’t think to charge my kindle or download movies to my tablet. :smack:

They canceled, despite my best efforts to make them go. Honestly, their staying home will have zero effect on when the power comes back on. But did they listen to me? Nope.

We never lost power - just a couple of flickers. The sticks are still all over the yard - I’ll get to them eventually. Not a lot on the roof - I’m guessing most of it blew off.

We’ve decided to go out for supper, just because we can. All in all, it wasn’t a terrible experience at FairyChatEstates.

I was supposed to fly to Florida yesterday, through Philadelphia, so unsurprisingly the flight was cancelled. I asked about rebooking on a later flight and was told the first seat seat available was on Wednesday! Nothing happening up north here but a couple of centimetres of snow.

Lost power for a day over the weekend, as did all my local relatives. The house dropped to 57 overnight, and we would have bugged out to a hotel if it had continued.

As of Monday morning, seven schools in Fairfax County are closed because they still have no power. There is apparently an awful lot of damage out there to be repaired.

My mom is still without power in Harford county. Found out this morning that it’s just her and the neighbor in back who are dark, so for 2 people, the priority is pretty low. She and my sister have gone to my brother’s house closer to Baltimore to shower and eat, plus eating out, but my sister has 2 dogs and 2 cats, so they can’t be gone all the time.

There’s a working fireplace in the living room to help keep the chill off, but being on a well, they have no running water, no phone (VOIP) and no heat at all in the basement where my sister and her critters all live. I’m over 100 miles away, so I’m no help.

A different neighbor said we got it back Sat morning.

To be on the safe side, I turned off the water before I left on Friday (planned weekend away) & left a spigot open to drain what I could out of the system so that if it was out longer & pipes started to freeze there would be less water in the system so hopefully it could expand thru the pipe & if something did burst & then thaw there wouldn’t be that much leakage until I got home & turned the water back on. You know how it’s loud & splashy when you first turn a faucet on after there’s been air in the system. The toilet flush was, ummm, startling this morning.
Just saw an update, at the height of the storm 'letricco had 630,000 outages & still have 55,000 as of this morning, ⅓ or more in my county.

No interruption of power, no tree falls, just a surprise 3-day weekend for me. Trees in our general area did go down, in one case tearing the front 20% off someone’s attached garage. But we were fine.

The more I hear about the effects of this storm in other places, the luckier I feel!

Who was going to look after the critters while they were on their cruise? Not an option anymore?

When we had that derecho 5 years ago, I was living in Arlington and my house lost power for 2-3 days. I had options, but my dog did not: her kennel was totally full and I couldn’t take her to a hotel or to any of my friends’ houses, so we stayed home. I was in a one-level house that didn’t get terribly hot, plus I had two battery-powered fans, but it was still July in D.C. so a couple times a day I’d put the dog in the car and we’d drive around for a while with the air conditioning on. I’d charge my phone, and on the way home I’d hit a drive-thru for food. It wasn’t bad for a few days, but I think I would have been seriously over it if the outage had stretched into day 4.

(I know, I know: being hot isn’t the same as being cold, you can’t just throw cats in a car a couple times a day, etc. I’m not suggesting anything, your post just reminded me of that storm/this story. :))

Our BIL was going to stay with the critters - but his house lost power also. Plus some illogical drama about the power outage that we couldn’t talk them out of - bottom line - my family is weird.

Looks like we got another one heading up the coast late tonight into tomorrow morning. Shouldn’t be quite as bad down this way, though.

Lights flickering here…
