Today is the day that, for me, means that Spring has officially arrived in Kentucky–opening day at Keeneland.
While I have always loved spending a day at the track, and have had varied luck betting the races, I have never given serious study to the sport. I am a seasoned gambler in other arenas, and know the ins and outs of most casino games fairly well, but I don’t get much past the “pick a cool name” method when it comes to the ponies. (Sure, I read the form, consider past performances, etc., but I’ve never found that to be any more helpful than, say, picking by color.)
Is it possible to consistently win money betting on horses? Does anyone have any good recommendations for how one could learn to do so? (Good books, etc.) Are any of the handicapping services/tip sheets/etc. worth more than the paper they’re printed on?

PS: My favorite quote ever at the racetrack came when I asked a classmate with beer in hand how he had been doing that day: “I keep betting on Budweiser, and she keeps on coming in!”
