Newsflash—we didn’t start this thread. Are we not entitled to respond to such a thread?
What I can’t figure out is why someone who uses something that is so vastly in the majority (what is it? 90+%?) gives a flying shit what perhaps 3 - 8% of the computer using public is using. We Mac users are in such a small minority—how can our measly numbers matter so much to the rest of you?
When was the last time one of us Mac users started a thread spouting off about how superior Macs are, and saying that “those Windows ads just piss me off” or something like that? I mean, I am not doubting that it’s happened, I’m really not. But when? When was a thread started by a Mac user soley (solely) to trash PCs? But I can give you several anti-Mac threads. Several. So who has more “passion” here, do you think?
I see them all the time. Not on this messageboard, usually, but they are all over the Internet. For such a small segment of the computer-using population, they sure do make a hell of a lot of noise. What gets me is how often outright misinformation is used in promoting the Macintosh platform, compared to how few people actually use it.
Of course, the OP is pretty much the equivalent of throwing rocks at a hornet’s nest, which I only condone when I’m far enough away to be amused by it.
“Not on this messageboard” is the key word here. Why start such a thread on this board, then?
No, I don’t see a lot of PC-bashing on this messageboard. I see a lot of PC-bashing on the Mac messageboards, but that is to be expected. But when was the last time you PC users visited a Mac messageboard? And yet there are PC users who regularly troll Mac messageboards. Just to start fights. Damned pathetic. And I’m sure when Mac users troll PC boards too—and they’re equally pathetic when they do so.
And I might mention, a lot of misinformation is being spread about Macs as well. I am not technically inclined so I cannot get too specific, but one common thing I see is people bitching about pre-OS X things, and yet trying to pass the information off as a current issue with Mac. (Newsflash: if it ain’t OS X, it ain’t current.)
I can sympathize with the OP - it’s not that (I’m guessing) he’s trying to proactively bash macs - it’s just that he might be in the presence of Mac Fanatics.
Mac Fanatics have to tell you ‘mac does photoshop faster!’ every time you mention pictures. They have to tell you ‘you can’t get professional grade audio editors on PCs!’ every time you mention liking a song. etc.
They’ll rant and rant about how macs are faster and better and can do this and this. Anyway.
The OP, being subjected to this bullshit (I assume, since I’ve been subjected to this sort of stuff and it annoys the hell out of me), found a document stating that the supposed mac superiority might not be what it’s cracked up to be (I assume, I just skimmed it), it’s a way of saying “HA! SEE! SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!”
Hmm…yeah, I suppose this is a good reason to switch to Macs?
Warning: The Quicktime video contained in the link is probably not work safe, though the start page shows nothing indecent (you’ll have to click on the video to start it). I hope this satisfies the “two-clicks” rule.

“I’ll mop the floor with your face.”
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”
“Why not?”
“Because, you won’t be able to get in the corners.”

So, I can shave a few tenths of a second off all my photo editing jobs, in exchange for a higher learning curve, more crashes, and more downtime while I wait for tech support?
Additional news update: I haven’t used a Mac in close to ten years. I currently own no less than four PCs. And I want to offer a big frothy mug of Shut The Fuck Up to everyone on either side of this debate. I mean, of all the petty, worthless things to get your panties in a bunch over. What the hell is the point? Do you really think anyone is going to be swayed by this sort of shit? Do you think the next time I’ve got $1,000 plus to spend on a computer, my purchasing decision is going to be set by some asshole on the internet berating me because I can save .7 seconds when I view TIF photos? It’s like arguing the merits of Christianity versus Islam by comparing the print quality between the New Testament and the Qu’ran. “Look, mine has gilded edges! Yours doesn’t have gilded edges!” They both do the same damn thing, and they both do it with equal adequacy, and it’s only the drooling, braindead fanatics who don’t get that.
But the audience is here. We are the audience. A bunch of Mac users who don’t start PC-bashing threads and are completely sick of reading yet another Mac-bashing thread. “Choose your audience” sounds like relevant advice. Perhaps we are not the best audience.
True enough. Personally, I don’t know where you are finding these busloads of rabid Mac fans. All I encounter are PC users who are bothered because I use a Mac.
Speaking from my own perspective, I think it is extremely poor manners to tell me that a purchase that I made with great planning and thought is stupid. Which is what PC users do on a regular basis, IRL and on message boards. If I were come up to someone and show off a new dress I bought, or a new car, only a classless boor would say, “You wasted your money. What a load of crap you bought.” (Even if they think that privately, they won’t voice it to me. It’s called “good manners”.)
But yet that’s what PC users (and sometimes, Mac users) do all the time. It’s RUDE. And since I never NEVER have told a PC user this (and since I own a PC too, and will be eventually getting a new one, why would I say this?) I don’t think I deserve to be told this. I don’t think any of us deserve to be told this. What happened to some of you—were you raised by wolves? Have you no common courtesy? Does it ever occur to you that we actually KNOW what we want, and KNOW what product suits us best? We don’t need your flea-bitten input when it comes to a computer preference?
Once again, it’s just rude. Very bad manners. That’s why I get irritated.
Uh, just to be clear, I should’ve followed that sentence with a :D. I don’t care either way and usually stay out of platform wars, but I thought the video was just too funny not to share. (Yeah, feel free to flame my sense of humor.)
