You have to understand, California has lots of snow. We keep it up in the mountains where we can go visit it if we want. We are smart enough not to live in it.
Your winter clothes will be just fine here. A super cold snap might get to 0C in the AM and would warm up to 10C during the day. Mostly during winter it is probably 7-10C at night (depending on where you are of course) and warms up to 15-20C during the day.
If you do go to the Nixon library, I work down the road, near Disneyland, if you need anything you can call PM me for my cell #
And yes you can find Republicans in Los Angeles. Hell drive to the valley, and I can even introduce you to a Republican Congressional candidate.
You should also keep in mind that the central area of Los Angeles is more likely to be chilly in the last days of fall, rather than winter proper, and it will mostly be after the sun goes down. (It has happened a few times, actually, where Christmas day was cooler in L.A. than New York city.) By January, though, currents from the Pacific bring moist air that for the most part carry rain and keep the temperature from going too low.
However, often, when it rains in downtown L.A., and the temperature is low enough, there will be snow on Mt. Wilson, which is only about 15 miles away from downtown L.A..
The '92 riots took place mostly in South Central, Koreatown, and Hollywood. Actually, there were problems all over (including Compton), but the starting points and bulk of activity were further north and west of Compton. Compton is next to Watts, where there were riots in the 60s.
Not much of one. To oversimplify a bit (but not much), LA is a Democrat stronghold, while Orange County is Republican.
I would recommend the Nixon Library no matter what your politics, as long as you have the transportation. And I will second someone’s recommendation for the Getty, it should not be missed.
Los Angeles can have brutal winters. I lived there when going to college, and sometimes on my midnight chili-burger and donut runs I truly wished I had worn a sweater instead of just jeans and a t-shirt. Not cold enough for steamy breath, but goose bumps! The horror. The horror.
Also, keep in mind it rains for 20 days a year in the LA area. You will want to be inside when this happens, because when it does rain, it comes down like a waterfall. Extremely fast run off in the streets and enough to knock you over. And nobody in LA knows how to drive in wet weather. Stay inside and order pizza or delivery.
If you go to San Francisco, you will need a variety of clothing, except warm weather gear, which will only be needed for late Sept and early Oct. SF is deceptively cold.
Yes, there are Republicans in LA and SF and all over the state. Waving hands under bathroom stalls, or whatever it is Republicans do with their secret mating rituals. Most people in California do not give a shit about politics, so you are safe staying away from the subject. As a foreigner, remember Obama is our son of bitch and nod agreeably when the locals, Dem and Rep run him down. But do not actually say anything substantive. Whatever you do, do not say anything that might sound like “black”.
Various Republican sites in So Cal include the Nixon Apology Campus, the Reagan Deification Center and USC. There is a statue of John Wayne in front of the Orange County International Airport, and Pepperdine University is in Malibu. No danger of running into any Democrats at any of those except the airport. Republican movie stars include Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bo Derek, Kirk Cameron, Kelsey Grammar, and that Ms. Heath gal who played Deborah Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond. Buy a map to the stars homes and feel free to ring their doorbells. Terri Garr has some knockers.
Welcome to California. Please swing by New York on your way home and take back Mr. Murdoch. Thank you very much.
The past couple of weeks have been unseasonably warm, even by our standards. I’m not complaining though. Normal temps during the day here in the city ranges from the 60’s F to mid 70’s F. There’s usually not much of a wind, but people who are used to this weather have scarves just in case.
About rain, in winter we usually get some rain, so I can’t promise it’ll be sunny and cool when you come at the end of the month. Luckily, it usually doesn’t stay rainy for more than a day or two.
Nights can be cold, like in the 50’s. Lucky for us the ocean prevents evenings from cooling down too fast. Overnights usually drop down to the 40’s, so bring extra blankets
Like Rick I’m from the area too. I live a short bike ride from the Nixon Library (there’s a bike trial that runs right by it) and I work across the street from Disneyland. So if you have any questions about the area or want any suggestions I’d be happy to oblige.
Thanks Harmless. Everyone has been so helpful and hospitable - I’m getting great vibes here! Of course, we’re doing fun stuff - Disneyland, Universal Studios, shows, etc You can’t travel all this way and not do that stuff.
The advise is quite correct. I used to live in Ridgecrest(north and east of L.A.) in the desert.
Christmas time we would go to the in-laws(San Dimas) shuck our coats and swim in the pool.
Cali is kinda wacky that way.
