Winter Vacation in Hokkaido

It looks likely that the first week of February will see me in Hokkaido. With luck, I plan to fly into Sapporo and travel to one of the Winter resorts.

I’d like to try my hand at some winter sports there. Are there special preparations that are needed for travelling and staying in Japan?

Likewise are there any resorts to be avoided, or any too good to miss? If they are all good, which one would you recommend? Any tourist traps to watch out for?

Your thoughts and impressions much appreciated.

No idea. I’ve only been to Hokkaido once, which was during the summer.

As to that, all I would offer as a warning would be to not stay at a ski resort during the summer. All the food they serve is food they froze during the winter when the kitchen staff was still there (or at least it tasted like several-month-frozen pre-made and nuked food.)

Sapporo seemed like a nice town. I’m sure you’ll be fine, though I’m not sure how cold it gets.
