Winter's a-coming! Season of Death Mini-Rants

I love the urgent care places. Flu shots are the best there; I like my doc and I like that she’s smart, but I don’t need to schedule a time, drive 15 minutes and wait 30 minutes to get a simple shot.

If you can get the shot at your local drugstore (like we can here), you really don’t need to.

My insurance provider doesn’t cover flu shots from drugstores. :stuck_out_tongue: I go there anyway, since I get charged for an office visit in addition to the flu shot if I go to my regular doctor.

Ewww. Customers also try too hard to come up with “witty” remarks to servicepeople’s inquiries. Here’s a frequent knee-slapper I get:

Me (after standard greeting): Is there anything I can help you find?
Customer: big grin Yeah, how about a million dollars? laughs
Me*: Well, sir, I’m afraid we don’t stock cash. May I suggest the bank across the street? I’ll bet they will think you are just a hoot!

*I don’t really say that, but I’d like to. Mostly, I just roll my eyes and wonder how many jackasses I’m going to have to suffer that day. My usual response is to break out my best fake chuckle and make the customer feel welcome and witty. I don’t care. Just spend money, dude, and help secure my job a little longer.

Oh, I guess I was using the term “urgent care” loosely to mean “not my doctor’s office”. I went to the CVS Minute Clinic, but now go to the Walgreens Take Care clinic. I’ve never been to a true “urgent care” clinic then, I guess.

My employer provides free on-site flu shots for us. Nyah nyah.

Dammit, Canada, you can keep your damn Arctic air. Personally I don’t mind, but even plugging my car in at night, it does not like to get going when it gets to -20F overnight. (And don’t get me started on the “repair” to the outside socket that failed, leaving me having to call AAA on Friday morning to get it started as there was no power to my block heater. I will be taking that up with my landlord.) It’s a fourteen-year-old car so I get it not liking extreme cold , but god-fucking-damn it’s been cold the last few days! It’s on the way up again, but it if does this behind every storm this year, oh my poor car…

Two words.

Jury. Duty.

I am 23. I have been selected for jury duty THREE TIMES now. That’s an averages out to months, not even years! Twice before was while in college for my hometown, so I had an easy excuse: “She is at college several thousand miles away”. So okay, whatever, civic duty n’at.

BUT…I do NOT like giving out my race at ALL and there’s no “decline to answer” box, just as there’s no “multiple race” or “select as many as apply box”. Urrrrrrrrrrgh.

makes mental note to be on high alert for “yinz” in lindsaybluth’s posts

It’s the only thing that got me through the last post

So select them all.

Many years ago there was a chance that Mr Coat was going to be transferred to St Louis. We had taken a trip to the office he would be working in the year before and I reminded him that there were block heater stations in the parking lot (something he had never seen before), for a building where the workers rarely stayed past 5 pm. Block heaters, for the daytime.

So now that winter is actually here, instead of on the way, what say we reconvene in the paper towel filler thread?

That’s crazy, I never even saw that when I lived in Minneapolis, and they have much colder weather. (Block heaters regularly in use during the day, I mean, not block heaters in general.)

Concur. In case anyone con-cares.

Thirded. Can we shut this monstrosity down?

Yeah, 29 pages is enough.

There will be other threads, and there will always be more to bitch about.

Yeah, I’m in such a hurry find out how much I have to pay in. Not that I have the money to pay in anyway, seeing as how tight things are right now. I’m making $200 less a month than I was a year ago. Oh well, someone has to support all those single moms out there!

Chew me out for that remark, but when I hear the single moms at work BRAGGING about how much they’re getting back in taxes (MUCH more than they paid in), when they tell me they get $600 a month on their food card (which they admit is more than needed), when they don’t have to worry about medical issues because it’s all paid for by the government (my employer dropped our insurance and I can’t afford to buy my own right now), when their daycare only costs them about $20 a month (opposed to the usual hundreds), when their schooling is paid for by the government, when their rent and utilities are subsidized, when they brag about their Wiis and big, flatscreen tvs, yeah, I’m a little bitter.

I’ve never been a single mom, but other than that, I HAVE lived that “lifestyle” for several years at a time.*

I can tell you that I’m much happier being on the giving end of the equation now.

Also, not to junior mod, but would it have killed you to put that in the paper towel thread? The middle of winter is no time to still be feeding a “Winter is coming” thread. :stuck_out_tongue:
*ETA: No flatscreen TV or Wii, but we did manage to score a secondhand Playstation.

Has anyone ever actually ASKED to have this thread closed? Officially, I mean.

Here’s an idea: those of you who want this thread shut down, hit that red trial to report this post.
“Dear Moderator: Now that fall has passed, and this thread has grown too large, how about closing it? We can use the paper towel thread as our catchall mini-rant thread instead.”

Done and done.
