Wireless Connection Help Needed for a Friend

A friend of mine in MA lives out in the boonies and has a wireless connection for her computer. Lately she has been having a lot of trouble connecting and staying connected.

Bear with me here… I know nothing of such things… I have her on the phone right now.

It’s a Netgear Wireless adaptor. She had to upgrade to one that picks up the signal a further range. Her employer (on the same property) is having NO connection problems.

Sometimes it won’t connect at all, and others it pops on-off-on-off.

She has tried everything she knows how to do-rebooting, defragging, disc cleaning, anti-spywaring, Netgear repair button… nothing is working. When she uses the repair, she gets a message saying ‘sorry-can’t find connection’.

Anyone have any ideas what’s going on and how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Her location relative to the ISP should not factor into the problem, unless the problem is that you’re losing INTERNET, but the network connection is stable.

Is she connecting to the network using a USB adapter or PCMCIA card? I’ve had better experiences with the latter.

Did it work fine before? It might be a sign that the adapter’s conking out.

She is using the USB adaptor, and it is less than a year old. Like I said, her boss, who lives right there on the property, is having no issues at all.

This happened to her before, a couple months ago, but it seemed to resolve itself, but now it’s back with a vengance.

It sounds like she is at the edge of the usable range for the wireless signal.

I would try some of these tips.
