I want to wake up my big PC with my IPad. However, it connects to my router wirelessly, and its position make it inconvenient to make a wired connection…
Is there a WOL option, or a similar protocol, that I can use for my PC? Thanks to anyone who can steer me in the right direction.
It depends
What hardware are you on? Wake on Wireless Lan isn’t as well supported as Wake on Lan
To clarify - it really depends on what hardware is in the PC. Intel are pretty much the only vendors supporting WoWL at the moment. The wireless adaptor has to be able to affect the power state on the motherboard and if it’s not explicitly supported in your BIOS you’re probably SoL.
Thanks. I’m going to check the main board when I get home. It is an intel P4…is there anything else that would tell me if it is/isn’t compatible?
Check your BIOS - ( to get to BIOS, when booting your machine there should be a screen before the Windows splash screen saying something like hit DEL or F4 to enter setup. If you hit the keys you’ll get into to the BIOS configuration).
If there’s an option for WoWL then you should be good, it’ll probably be disabled by default so you’ll have to enable it. If there’s no option then it’s very unlikely that your computer will support it.
Here’s a link for how to enable it in Windows 7 Configure Wake on Wireless LAN (WoWLAN) | Microsoft Learn .
Bear in mind that this method will still depend on whether your wireless card is able to affect the power state (i.e. it depends on wireless adapter and motherboard).
