I have an HP 5850 wireless printer. I have a dlink dl-624 router. The wireless network was recently secured. Now the printer does not work. I feel certain it has to do with the network now needing a password. The person who secured the network as a favor is currently out of the country. I don’t want to mess things up more than they are. How do I add my printer to my now secured network?
I’ve never dealt with one, but I’d expect to configure it via a wired network connection first.
Can you move the printer so you can plug it in while you do that?
Yes, I can do that but do not know what to do after that.
I would suspect that you would need to access the printer’s configuration and set the security password. If you hard-wire it (temporarily) into your network, you should be able to access it via your browser and configure it with the proper password. Then remove the cable and have it access via the wireless. Should be similar to how they configured it the first time, if they had to change any defaults.
I have more or less the same setup. There should be a URL you can enter into your browser that connects you to the routers configuration. It should tell you in the routers instruction manuel or online somewhere along with the default password (which you should change).
Somewhere in the settings there should be a “key” that looks like a long string of numbers and letters. I find it useful to past it into a word document and set it to a large fancy font that differentiates between one (1), capital “I” and lowercase “l” a bit better than the default system font.
There should be a menu option on the printer to enter this key to connect to the network.
After searching around I found that this particular printer sometimes has problems handling a password. I went to the router and removed password protection on the network, considering where we live that is a minuscule risk, and as I had, we have had it unsecured for over 10 years anyway. The printer still doesn’t work. I notice that the name of the network has been changed. I figured that the printer would automatically change that, but it did not. As best I can figure the problem now seems to be that the printer needs to be told the new name of the network. How do I do that?
Here’s the HP website “How to use wireless and network” for your printer model: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documentSubCategory?tmp_rule=12498&tmp_task=useCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=305980#
Good luck.
