I want a Pope who holds mass in Latin
I want a Pope who’s got the knack
I want a Pope who’s got a plan
To get the Church on a modern track
I want a Pope with a generous spirit
Who’s kind, and gentle, and smart as a whip
He’s visiting faithful, he’s appointing new bishops
He’s reforming the clergy and taking no lip
I want a Pope with a short cope
And a looooooooooooong cassock

I want a Pope who’ll revise the liturgy
I want a Pope who prays at midnight
I want a Pope who’s a brilliant scholar
Who combines wit and logic with an inner light
With deep concern for social justice
And not too quick with the sealing wax
He’s kind, and gentle, and smart as a whip
He’s reforming the clergy and taking no lip
I want a Pope with a short cope
And a long, long cassock

I want a Pope who’s strong and healthy
With a build that’s lean and slim
At St. Peter’s he’ll wear a mitre
White with jewels and golden trim
He’ll have a staff with a crucifix on it
And white vestments for every feast
He’s changing his name in accord with tradition
To something like Paul or Boniface
I want a Pope with a short cope
And a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong cassock
