It’s unfortunate that Coburn said what he said but it’s history now. I assume he was caught up in the moment and the adoration. He believed that his horse could beat the same horses on three different tracks. Maybe he could but that doesn’t take reality into consideration.
The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes are three different races held in three different states. Kentucky, Maryland, and NY horse racing have different governing bodies. There is no tri-state trifecta between the tracks. There has never been a requirement that the horses entered in the Kentucky Derby must also enter the Preakness and Belmont or that horses who weren’t entered in the Derby can not enter the Preakness or Belmont. It’s the owner’s choice, assuming they qualify, if they wish to race in any or all of the races that make up the Triple Crown. Coburn knows this.
The Triple Crown is a lofty goal and very difficult to achieve. If Secretariat had stumbled out of the gate and had been boxed in at any of these races, one of the fastest horses ever bred wouldn’t have been a Triple Crown winner. That’s horse racing.
Coburn is new to this game. As the trainer said, he’s new, and his luck so far had been good. He’s outspoken and needs to learn to shut his mouth, and I thought that before the Belmont. And he’s a minority owner. It’s Perry Martin who owns [what? 70% is it? I think that’s right.] of California Chrome.
Coburn and Martin should have their pictures somewhere in a book showing classic extroverts and introverts.
Someone on a racing board I frequent, who is with a group that owns horses, mentioned a few weeks ago that his group had made an offer on CC back in February, and the owners were a lot less likeable than they seemed on NBC’s puff pieces. He was proven right, in a big way.
Did I say Coburn? I meant to say Clinton. just kidding. hehehe.
Gee whiz, BobLibDem, the guy made a simple mistake. Alcohol MAY have been involved. He was upset, said what he said into a camera, realized what he had said was wrong, and apologized. Give him a break. It’s not like he said he was a Republican.
If he said he was Republican, I’d be harder on him. Look, the guy made a shitload of money because his horsie won two races. Then he gets beat in a race and he acts like a big dick. I don’t care if he was drunk or was upset, he’s well old enough to know better.
