To upgrade my post from five years ago, Kenneth Branagh has now appeared in a Marvel movie as a performer. The voiceover at the beginning of Infinity War - the distress call - is him.
And the upcoming Black Widow movie - expected in 2020 - has:
Rachel Weisz - nominated twice (2006, 2019) and won once.
Are we still looking at 1972 for how far back to find an Oscars without an actor in a Marvel movie? I want them to cast someone just so we can end up back in the 60s somehow.
Now that Scarlett Johansson has earned two Screen Actors Guild nominations (Lead for MARRIAGE STORY and supporting for JOJO RABBIT), it appears that she is likely to become the 20th nominee in the cast of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, as well as an addition to this thread overall.
Of the other current likely contenders in this year’s Oscar races, that’s the only conspicuous name that will probably be added, but I would hate to completely rule out Wesley Snipes (BLADE), who turns in a wonderful supporting turn in DOLEMITE IS MY NAME.
So it’s official: Johansson is in, which means the official tally of Oscar nominees/winners in AVENGERS: ENDGAME (which is also up for Best VFX) is 20:
Angela Bassett
Josh Brolin
Don Cheadle
Bradley Cooper
Benedict Cumberbatch

(*indicates winner)
This is the second highest tally of Oscar nominees/winners as cast members for any film. Can anyone think of the film with the highest number (29)?
Did you count Michael Tolkin, who earned a nod for the film’s screenplay and made a cameo in his own film? I also said Oscar nominees/winners, which would include Harry Belafonte, who was never nominated but did win the Jean Hersholt award (which is an Oscar statuette).
