Without looking it up, how many Oscar nominees have been in Marvel films?

3 new Marvel films this year mean (based on the IMDB cast lists) the following additions:

Cate Blanchett
Jeff Goldblum
Sylvester Stallone
Ken Watanabe

Oscar nominees Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne will be in Ant-Man and the Wasp

I saw the heading, so asked my 17 and 19 year old sons. They pretty much got everybody from the movies.

In a bizarre turn, the Ken Watanabe in the just-released Thor: Ragnarok is a different person by that name, so he’s out. But if you’ve seen it, you know that Matt Damon makes an uncredited cameo, so he’s in!

Is it sad that as soon as I saw that seen, I thought to myself “I need to post to that topic!”

I also went and looked up if

Sam Neil

was nominated for an Oscar.

Did anyone mention Glenn Close for Guardians?

Jude Law (nominated for Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain) has been cast in Captain Marvel.

New nominees are out, and we can now add Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2) and Daniel Kaluuya (Black Panther)

Let’s also give props to the first Director nomination for Guillermo Del Toro (Blade 2). He joins Kenneth Branagh (Thor) and Ang Lee (Hulk) as the only people who have directed a Marvel movie and received an Oscar nod for Best Director.

Should half a point go to Taika Waititi?

(Still, though: all the possibilities! Spider-Man, written and directed by Woody Allen! Moon Knight, by way of the Coen Brothers! She-Hulk, by Quentin Tarantino!)

Honorable mentions go to these directors of Marvel movies who are Oscar nominees/winners in other categories

Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) - Best Foreign Language Film winner (Tsotsi, South Africa)
Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) - Best Visual Effects winner (Raiders of the Lost Ark)
James Mangold (The Wolverine) - Best Adapted Screenplay nominee for this year’s Logan
Tim Miller (Deadpool) - Best Animated Short nominee
Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) - Best Live Action Short nominee
Joss Whedon (The Avengers) - Best Original Screenplay nominee (Toy Story)

Oh, and we might as well mention that the Marvel Cinematic Universe* is officially the movie franchise with the most Oscar nominations in history without a win.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2 nods)
Iron Man (2)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (1)
Doctor Strange (1)
Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 (1)
Iron Man 2 (1)
Iron Man 3 (1)
Marvel’s The Avengers (1)

10 nominations total so far (8 for Best Visual Effects)

*Wiki says Raimi’s Spider-Man movies are outside this universe. The 2nd installment did win Best Visual Effects

Janet McTeer’s role on JESSICA JONES seems worth a mention.

Annette Bening joining the cast of Captain Marvel

Also, I, uh, hear that Brie Larson is going to be in that one.

George Lucas produced Howard the Duck. Can we count that one?

Men in Black is a Marvel property so we can add Spielberg, Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Rip Torn.

Bumping because, to err on the side of caution, VENOM stars Tom Hardy along with Michelle Williams, plus — I’m not sure this is really a spoiler — Woody Harrelson.

The animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (opening next month) features the following additions:

Nicolas Cage
Hailee Steinfeld
Lily Tomlin

Well, TLJ was already in (the first Captain America film) and if you add the MIB sequels, that expands to Emma Thompson, too.

And neither Spielberg nor Lucas directed a Marvel film, which was the threshold we were looking at for the other list.

So the Oscar nominations come out later this month and it seems that very likely new additions will include

A STAR IS BORN’s Sam Elliott (Hulk, Ghost Rider)
CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?'s Richard E. Grant (Logan)
