Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon.

If it is a coincidence it certainly is an amazing one. Of course everything doesn’t sync up, it has to be a listenable album on it’s own. The synchronicity would explain the long silent portions on the album.

The scene where Dorothy is knocked out at the same time as the music mellows out is quite dramatic. And the airplane sounds in “On the Run” while Dorothy is singing over the rainbow and looking at the sky is another very startling coincedence.

If you want to try it yourself check out this site for a list of more amazing coincedences. Is Dark Side of the Moon A Soundtrack for the Wizard of Oz. It will open in a new window.

The Mailbag answer being referenced is: Does the music in Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon coincide with the action of The Wizard of Oz?

The real test, however, is one that David doesn’t mention: watch WIZARD OF OZ and put a recording of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony on your CD player. Test out how many times the music seems absolutely in synch with the movie. Check out how many times the music hits a dramatic point JUST at the same time that something exciting happens in the movie. Check out how many times the music is slow and brooding during a slow scene in the movie.

Now, pick any album you’d like. I’ve got a two-CD set of Ella Fitzgerald singing songs of Cole Porter, and let me tell you, the number of times that a line from Cole Porter is RIGHT in synch with what’s happening in WIZARD OF OZ is just incredible!

Does the music in Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon coincide with the action of The Wizard of Oz?

“I caught Dext making a mistake, I caught Dext making a mistake…” (Singing and dancing)

I have a friend who spent a weekend watching several movies while listening to DSOTM. Some of the movies, in addition to The Wizard of Oz, were Gone With the Wind, Bladerunner, Vertigo, and Star Wars.

He said that compared to Star Wars and Bladerunner, Oz didn’t synchronize well at all. Those Pink Floyd guys must’ve been geniuses to make an album that synchronizes with so many movies, don’t ya think?

In some discussions I’ve had about this, the general consensus is that if you watch your favorite movie with your favorite album, you’ll be amazed at how they synchronize. Heeey, maybe all albums and all movies are all planned so they all synchronize! Yeah! It couldn’t just be that the human brain looks for patterns.

I’m personally always amazed at how those figure skaters manage to skate in perfect time to whatever music is on the radio. Heeey, maybe the radio stations all get copies of the skating broadcasts and plan it all ahead of time!

Yeah, that must be it. No way it could just be mere coincidence.

While watching the fantastic “For all mankind” documentary about the moon missions there was a shot of the big display board at the Houston control center. Upon landing they centered on a triangle (which I asume represents the LEM) with a trajectory vector that looked very much like the album cover. The artist must have been influenced by the display.

Any space buffs that can clarify?
