Every security checkpoint I went through before and after my vacation this week made me (and everyone else in line) remove any electrical/battery operated device from their baggage and fire it up. Dead or missing batteries weren’t excused - at least on the Canadian end - if the device couldn’t be charged, it was going to be confiscated before the flight. The only person this actually applied to in the end was some woman with shoe driers that were taking forever to charge - she was still having a protracted arguement with security staff about how this when everybody else was ready to board.
